Alarmed by the Australian Government of the day's inability to foster local aircraft production nor plan adequately for the nation's defence in the war it seemed that everyone else could see coming, local businessmen started the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation in 1935 as a private venture- choosing the Wirraway trainer as its first product- a license-built variant of the familiar North American NA-16. With Mother England soon busy fighting Hitler, the government here "down-under" got a rude shock when Pearl Harbor happened and they realised they'd forgotten to finish making an air-force! So Australian airforce Wirraways and their brave crews immediately went to the Pacific frontline to dogfight with the dreaded Mitsubishi "Zero" fighter, ...with predictable results. « Less
