Emapsite and OceanWise redraw marine mapping provision with new partnership

January 09, 2012 -- Companies operating in the marine and coastal zone around the world can now access the most up-to-date and detailed digital map data through emapsite, the UK’s  leading geoportal.

Thanks to a new partnership with independent marine data specialists OceanWise, emapsite is hosting and supplying essential raster tiled chart and vector marine themes data.

The portfolio includes raster images of the popular UKHO series of nautical charts and a new generation of marine topographic mapping and seabed surface models created by OceanWise.

All products are optimised for desktop, mobile and web based geographical information systems in virtually all common data formats.

Among those to benefit from the partnership will be engineers, insurers, port and harbour operators, government agencies, environmental consultancies and energy suppliers.

James Cutler, emapsite CEO, said: “OceanWise has a growing reputation for marine data acquisition, knowledge management and GIS. Our new partnership is both an exciting opportunity and a very natural fit for us. We already have the most up-to-date mapping and geographic information for land. Now we have a spatial database for coastal waters and the marine environment. This enhancement to our online data provisioning will enable us to help existing clients as well as target new markets.”

OceanWise Managing Director Dr Mike Osborne said a range of applications would be supported by the partnership. They include oil and gas, renewable energy, fisheries and aquaculture, disaster mitigation and response, off shore mineral extraction, spatial planning and licensing, defence and civil security, engineering and construction.

Dr Osborne said: “Emapsite is a well established platform providing online location intelligence to a range of industry sectors. This new distribution channel will help introduce OceanWise products and value added services to existing and emerging markets. It enhances our role in gathering and applying marine data to solving offshore environmental engineering and regulatory challenges. The partnership complements our off-the-shelf software provision and system development.”

Visitors to the OceanWise stand at the Coastal Futures 2012 industry conference can see a demonstration of how the new service works.

The event takes place in the Brunei Gallery at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies on 18 and 19 January 2012.
