ITIS speed data renamed and enhanced following INRIX acquisition

May 14, 2012 -- The popular ITIS road speed data, which is processed by UK-based mapping technology company MapMechanics for use in drivetime and vehicle routing and scheduling software, is now known informally as INRIX data. The change follows the acquisition of ITIS Holdings plc by INRIX Inc. MapMechanics markets the data under the brand name GB Speeds.

The change involves more than just the name. MapMechanics has also developed a completely new way of processing the data, and can now provide detailed speed information for each link in a street-level network such those found in NAVTEQ map data and Ordnance Survey’s ITN products.

Details of these changes will be unveiled at a free seminar in London on 29 May 2012, which is being held to showcase the new data-processing methodology. It will demonstrate how the information is collected, and show how it can add value for various different types of organisation.

INRIX data is derived from billions of GPS signals captured from vehicles during everyday journeys. MapMechanics’ new processing methodology offers analysts and transport planners detailed real-world speeds by time of day, direction of travel and vehicle type.

Chris Greenwood, managing director of MapMechanics, explains the rationale for holding the seminar. “The benefit of GB Speeds has been enormous,” he says, “and we want to ensure people have the opportunity to see the difference that these further developments can make to their operations.”
