EnvironmentalLights.com to Sponsor Student Robotics Team at Francis Parker High School of San Diego

High School Robotics Team, the W.A.R.Lords, enters their sixth year of competition with support from local companies and community members

November 26, 2012 - EnvironmentalLights.com, a leading source for high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting, is pleased to announce that they will be sponsoring the student robotics team, the W.A.R.Lords (We Are Robot Lords) of Francis Parker High School in San Diego. This will be the team’s sixth year in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition and Science and Technology) Robotics Competition.

“We are so impressed by the W.A.R.Lords. These highly motivated high school students are seen as leaders in robotics among other high schools in the U.S., and each year they develop new technical and leadership skills they pass on to the underclassmen in the program to ensure continued growth,” said Greg Thorson, President of EnvironmentalLights.com. “As a mentor to W.A.R.Lords, I look forward to this year’s build season and competitions as much as the students! It is our pleasure to support this group of hard-working students in their quest for technical skills. EnvironmentalLights.com hopes to be joined by many other sponsors for the 2013 build season.”

“On behalf on the 55 members of the Francis Parker W.A.R.Lords, I can say that we are excited about our future with EnvironmentalLights.com and grateful for its generous sponsorship,” said Matthew Handmacher, Co-President of the W.A.R.Lords. “Sponsors allow us to reach our full potential and make the best robot possible while simultaneously assisting with our efforts to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and preserving the environment with our green initiatives. We are happy we can count on companies like EnvironmentalLights.com to support the development of science and technology.”

FIRST Robotics Competition

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) provides programs from kindergarten through twelfth grade promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. From the Junior FIRST LEGO League to the FIRST Robotics Competition, kids of all ages are shown first-hand how science can really extend outside the classroom. FIRST provides the support for new and existing teams to grow and become better every year through a system of mentors. Each team embodies Gracious Professionalism, which creates a collaborative environment that allows teams to thrive together.

The W.A.R. Lords (We Are Robot Lords) Team 2485 participates in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The event involves students in building a robot within a six week time frame from when the event is announced. Prior to the announcement the teams work on fundraising, training, planning and teaching new students on the team so they are prepared.

"The Francis Parker W.A.R.Lords are a group of driven, hard-working and intelligent students, and I am proud to be a part of this amazing team,” said Nicole Simmons, Co-President of the W.A.R.Lords.” Thanks to the support of companies like EnvironmentalLights.com we can continue to have this team grow and flourish into the engineers, programmers and even business people of tomorrow."

Sponsorship and Planning

Every year a new challenge is designed and clues are given out to build up anticipation for the official kick off, where the year’s challenge is revealed. Each team is given a kit of parts and about six weeks to meet the challenges they are given. But FIRST is not just about building, wiring, and programming robots. Students learn a wide range of skills. Each team must first apply for grants and raise the money to build their robot.

In the past the team has received contributions from companies and organizations such as Qualcomm, BAE, NASA, ASME, SIAC and General Dynamics. Donations and supplies allow the team to build a better robot, pay for travel expenses and entry fees for out-of-town competitions, and more successfully help the community.
