An Improved Step in China’s 3D Geological Mapping

May 03, 2013 -- Geological mapping is a professional complicated and tedious task. Precise various models are expected to be built with less time, big data is expected to be analyzed and managed better, as well as with more understanding of geological condition, existed models have to be updated frequently to be in line with current reality. A majority of our clients have complained their worries and troubles during their work while dealing with geological mapping tasks.

3D geological mapping is a major innovation of geological survey work. It has broken the limitation that geological data can only be used to generate traditional 2D maps.MapGIS 3D Geological Mapping Tool is professional software served for better visualized geological mapping. It contains complete 3D geological mapping oriented modeling process with integrated data management, 2D mapping and 3D modeling, which realizes the digitization and visualization of complex geological information.

The product was the result of research-education-innovation model of Zondy Cyber Group. Liu Xiuguo, professor of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan)made an introductory presentation regarding “3D Geological Mapping Techniques”at International Workshop on 3D Geological Mapping Techniques which sponsored by China Geological Survey in November 2011.Dr.Stephen John Mathers, director of Digital Geological Spatial Model project of British Geological Survey (BGS), Dr.Linda June Jacobsen, director of Five-year Plan of Underground 3D Geological Framework of Geological Mapping of United States Geological Survey(USGC), Dr.Yves Michaud, director of geological mappingof Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) Quebec and Dr.Kai Yang, member of 3D Mineral Mapping project of Australia Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) attended the seminar and communicated their suggestions regarding the future development of MapGIS 3D geological mapping software.

Technical Highlights of MapGIS 3D Geological Mapping Tool

Multi-methods for 3D Geo-modeling Tools

MapGIS 3D Geological Mapping tool adopts the following multiple methods to achieve 3D geo-modeling functions:

For simple stratigraphy region, the tool uses multi-source data such as borehole, section and contour to construct all stratum surfaces on the basis ofstratigraphic sequence, and then builds the whole area stratum entity model by overlap order.

Multi-source Data Coupling Geo-modeling with Standard Layer Order

For complex stratigraphy region, the tool adopts “subarea-splice”modeling thoughts. First splice regional according to the cross section to generate multiple grids, then search enclosed boundary in each grid to build stratum surface, and generate geological blocks separately by using topological relation. Finally, unite all blocks together to generate the regional 3D model.

Complex Geology Structure Modeling with Multi-constraints

For some specific regions, the tool adopts a man-machine interactive modeling method in each independent small units of the fine modeling, which integrates the geological knowledge of professionals with the modeling process. The final geological models of all units are combined as a whole.

Analysis of 3D Geological Model

After the accomplishment of geological model building, corresponding analysis can be conducted. Model analysis has been successfully conducted in urban geology and digital mining projects. This tool is to achieve multi-viewpoint real time dynamic visualized cutting analysis of all-space complex scene based on multi-viewpoint tracking technologies. It fully presents 3D entity modeling and evolution simulation of geological process.

Dynamic Simulation Analysis

This mapping tool can emancipate researchers and technicians from multifarious exhausted work, and provide them with more opportunities for exploration and innovation of unknown world.
