Locating the Future Conference - At the Intersection of GIS and 9-1-1

Des Plaines, IL (September 25, 2013) - URISA and the National Emergency Numbering Association (NENA) have once again partnered to present the preeminent conference about addressing in North America. Since 1996, addresses have been the leading theme of this annual conference, tackling important topics such as Census programs, address standards, legal issues with addresses and, most recently, NextGen9-1-1 and the importance of spatially accurate addresses. The conference has been re-engineered for 2013 as the Locating The Future Conference taking place November 3-6, 2013 in St. Louis, Missouri.

The explosive growth in the use of mobile phones, tablets and other location-aware devices is fundamentally changing the nature of emergency dispatch as well as the delivery of other services to consumers and the public at large.  Next Generation 9-1-1 technology, GIS technology, and the creation of address repositories and address point layers are critical elements needed to provide working solutions to the challenges posed by the changing nature of the marketplace.  Anyone who is, or will be, involved in the development or use of these spatial databases and tools should attend this conference.”  - Tom East, GISP, Senior GIS Specialist, Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission

The conference will begin with the option to take one of three preconference courses workshops:

  • Building an Address Repository Using the FGDC Standard: Implementing Quality and Data Sharing
  • GIS & NG9-1-1 for the PSAP
  • Emergency Preparedness for GIS

The conference will then welcome Tim Oliver, GIO/Assistant CIO for Horry County, South Carolina as our opening keynote speaker. Mr. Oliver will discuss "Transforming Our World—Delivering Intelligence Not Just Information".

Breakout sessions will delve into important topics including "Cooperation in Addressing", Implementing E-9-1-1 Address Standards on Military Installations", "Big Data Integration", and Updating the FGDC Thoroughfare, Landmark and Postal Address Data Standard".

Attend a showcase of innovative, real-time, on-the-fly GIS and Emergency response projects that are on the cutting edge of Next Generation implementations and hear from Matt Kulig of Aisle411, who will introduce the use of location in retail situations (with an indoor retail mapping and location service and mobile platform) ....an interesting twist to the typical addressing talk. The conference will close with a half-day hands-on session covering "Large Scale Address QC: Faster, Better, Easier (and Address Standard Compliant)".

Conference attendees may earn GISCI Certification (GISP) points and continuing education credits toward recertification as an Emergency Number Professional (ENP) with the National Emergency Number Association, as well as for recertification credit with the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch (NAED) for police, fire and medical emergency dispatchers.
