Construction in Florida Major-Metro Markets Increased 13.5% in Year-Over-Year Analysis, BidClerk Data Finds

Compared to the Same Period Last Year, Public Construction Increased 20.3% and Private Construction Increased 2.9% According to the BidClerk Construction Index™

CHICAGO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — October 29, 2013 — For major-metro regions in Florida, including Jacksonville, FL; Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL; Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, FL; Tallahassee, FL; and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL, the 3rd quarter BidClerk Construction Index™ (BCI™) reported that there was a 13.5% increase in construction projects that were actively bidding. Private construction activity increased 2.9% and public construction increased 20.3%. This compares to a 3rd quarter 2012 BCI report that showed private construction increasing 18.9% and public construction increasing 4.2%.

The total value of all Florida Major-Metro projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 3rd quarter of 2013 was $4.2 billion compared with a total contract value of $4 billion reported by the BCI in the 2nd quarter of 2013.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Miami region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 7.2%. This compares to an increase of 10.7% reported by the BCI for the 3rd quarter of 2012.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Tampa-St. Pete region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 9.8%. This compares to an increase of 24.4% reported by the BCI for the 3rd quarter of 2012.

One of the high-profile projects that BidClerk reported on for the 3rd quarter was Barcelona Square in West Palm Beach, which is being built for an estimated cost of $100 million. The general contractor is Kast Construction of West Palm Beach, FL. The architect is Currie Sowards Aguila Architects of Delray Beach, FL. Another notable project was the Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, FL. It is being built for an estimated cost of $148 million. The general contractor is Skanska USA Building Inc., and the architect is Tampa-based Gresham Smith & Partners.
