Sigma Designs Announces New High-Performance SoCs for Smart TVs

MILPITAS, CA -- (Marketwired) -- Jan 08, 2014 -- Sigma Designs® (NASDAQ: SIGM), a leading provider of System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions for home entertainment, control, connectivity and converging multimedia delivery, has unveiled its new SX6 series TV chip family at the 2014 CES show in Las Vegas 7-10 January 2014 in the Sigma Designs suite 2990 at the Las Vegas Hotel. Designed to support Ultra HD video, the Sigma Designs' HiDTV® PRO-SX6 is its first fully-integrated Ultra HD ready smart TV SoC. It includes all the key technologies required for advanced connectivity and OTT services for the Smart TVs, making it an industry-leading TV chip for a "connected world."

Designed to support both Full HD and Ultra HD size screens, the HiDTV PRO-SX 6 delivers high CPU and GPU performance based on Dual Core ARM A9 and Mali GPU. This chip produces true 4K picture without the need for downscaling the video to Full HD first and then upscaling to Ultra HD to overcome the performance limitations. The result is uncompromising 4K picture quality that consumers are looking for.

"Once again our team has come up with a timely solution that will enable our OEM and ODM partners to meet the demands of the market for leading edge, high-performance, high quality TVs," explained Mustafa Ozgen, vice president and general manager home multimedia for Sigma Designs. "The ever-increasing demand for large size TV screens with the same clarity of image and pixel density as smaller screens means that the need for Ultra HD resolution is also increasing. Our new product delivers the tools to get our partners to market quickly with a cost-effective Ultra HD and Full HD line up of TVs using the same chip. We designed the SX6 to give consumers the taste of real Full HD and UltraHD video processing. Unlike many products that claim to have Ultra HD resolution support, the SX6 does not compromise on video resolution in any way to meet the technical requirements of Ultra HD."

The HiDTV® PRO-SX6 is a single-chip solution that is an industry-leading product with a wealth of exciting features, including:

  • One integrated software stack for broadcast, broadband and in-home networking with uncompromised picture quality across use cases;

  • Support for Android and Linux operating systems, as well as pre-integrated software for TV middleware, DRM, HTML5 browser engine and wealth of other software packages to build a TV or other display products.

  • Judder-free and razor-sharp video content by offering best in class frame rate conversion technology; and

  • Leading quality 3D TV reproduction to avoid artifacts and headaches by offering movie judder reduction, high refresh rates (60Hz per eye) and re-timing on 3D content.
