37Games President Li Yi Fei Talks About the Future of Browser Games

2014 China Game Industry Annual Conference

HAIKOU, China, Dec. 23, 2014 — (PRNewswire) — For the previous two years, many people have been speculating that the browser game industry had passed its prime and was bound for an inevitable decline. Mr. Li likened the market for browser games to a marathon as opposed to a sprint. Instead of declining, he pointed to data to suggest that the market is maturing instead.

Li noted that as the market has matured, Chinese players' requirements have also grown. Higher quality games like The Sword of The Arch Angel will be required to meet the requirements of an aging, more experienced player base. With recent advancements towards the integration of the Unity 3D and Unreal 4 engines into browsers, Li reasoned that developers should be able to keep pace with higher consumer demands.

Recently Unreal has partnered with Mozilla to seamlessly integrate their graphics engine into the Mozilla Firefox browser. Unity 3D also has plans to make their game engine plug-in free in the near future. Li noted it will be up to developers and publishers to partner together to make next-generation games work directly from a browser without add-ons or plug-ins that players commonly associate with browser-based games.

In the future, 37Games plans to cooperate more with content providers from around the world to further diversify and enhance their game offerings to both China and the Western markets. Li feels confident that recent advancements made in browser technology, coupled with the acquisition of IP rights from famous movies, books, and games, will keep the browser game market flourishing for quite some time to come.
