3rd Quarter 2015

Welcome to Teledyne Optech's 3rd Quarter 2015 Newsletter!

We've been hard at work improving our product lines over the last few months, and the first result of this is the new single-sensor Optech Lynx SG-S mobile survey system. Cooperation with our academic and industry partners has also advanced the use of our airborne systems, such as improved forestry applications for our multispectral Optech Titan. Finally, we've added new faces to the management team to promote innovation and deliver enhanced services to our clients. Read on for more...

Recent News

Optech Lynx SG-S launches into mid-range market for mobile survey

On September 14 we launched our latest mobile survey solution, the Optech Lynx SG-S. Designed to give the best price versus performance ratio possible, the Lynx SG-S fulfills projects where accuracy requirements are high. To deliver the high relative and absolute accuracy that clients have come to expect from our products, the Lynx SG-S combines Teledyne Optech's laser measurement expertise with a best-in-class POS. The  Optech LMS processing suite pushes this level of accuracy to the utmost with improved ground control inputs, advanced segmented polynomial corrections, and automated rectification algorithms. Because the light-weight, single-sensor Lynx SG-S is mounted on a compact and rigid platform with its GNSS antenna and Point Grey Ladybug® camera, operators can easily install and remove the system without affecting the boresight parameters. These specifications make the Lynx SG-S an affordable option between the dual-sensor Lynx SG and the mapping-grade   Lynx M G.

Lynx SG-S offers an excellent price versus performance ratio.

Events and Conferences

Partners show forestry applications for lidar at SilviLaser 2015

This September, several clients and partners revealed new techniques and case studies for using Teledyne Optech airborne lidar in forestry and environmental mapping at the  SilviLaser 2015  conference in France, particularly with multispectral data. Prof. Benoît St-Onge of the Université du Québec à Montréal revealed new algorithms that he developed for identifying trees using data from the multispectral  Optech Titan . By combining the spatial data collected by the lidar channels with their relative intensity data, Prof. St-Onge has differentiated softwood-hardwood trees with 97% accuracy and even identified trees by genus with 85% accuracy. Meanwhile, Dr. Antoine Cottin of CarboMap explored the operational side of multispectral lidar. Finally, Prof. Enrico Paringit of the University of the Philippines discussed how the Optech Gemini and Optech Pegasus have assisted his country's resource management initiatives, including park surveys, wildfire monitoring, and making inventories of tree plantations.

Prof. St-Onge combined Optech Titan's spatial and multispectral data to identify trees by genus.

Interest grows in airborne systems at INTERGEO 2015

Teledyne Optech had another exciting visit to INTERGEO as we met with countless clients and partners from all around the world in Stuttgart, Germany. Before the show we outlined our roadmap for the terrestrial product line at our annual closed meeting for static survey dealers. Taking center stage at INTERGEO was the unveiling of the new Optech Lynx SG-S mobile survey solution. This spurred plenty of interest in our line of mobile products, which includes the Lynx MG and Lynx SG at different price points for various applications. Our representatives also fielded an unusually high number of requests about our airborne lidar lineup, including the SwathTRAK™ and PulseTRAK™ capabilities of the Optech Galaxy   and the potential uses of the Optech Titan's multispectral technology for land classification, tree identification, and simultaneous topo/bathy. Finally, several visitors inquired about the compact redesign of the Optech CZMIL Nova airborne lidar bathymeter and the CZMIL Project Program, which has already enabled several groups to rent the system and successfully complete surveying projects.

Visitors kept our staff busy with questions about Galaxy, Titan, CZMIL and more.

Success Stories

Michael Baker adds two more Optech Lynx mappers to its fleet

To meet the rapidly rising demand for its mobile mapping services, Michael Baker International has purchased two additional Optech Lynx SG mobile survey systems. As a global leader in engineering and consulting services, Michael Baker bought its first Lynx in 2009 and a second in 2014 to give clients fast, reliable data for targets like highways, airport runways, railway lines and flood control structures. These original purchases proved very successful, as Lynx's 1.2 million measurements per second, integrated camera, and production-focused Optech LMS processing suite enabled Michael Baker to deliver survey-grade data from systems travelling at highway speeds. Having doubled the size of its fleet from two to four systems, Michael Baker is now using them to help clients manage and grow their infrastructure. Currently, the systems are on a truly wide-scale project to map 14,000 traffic signals in Pennsylvania as part of the state's ground-breaking Traffic Signal Asset Management System.

Comings and Goings

Meet Dr. Mark Whorton

On August 18, Dr. Mark Whorton joined us as President of Teledyne Optech, Inc. In this position he will oversee the development of our  Optech CZMIL Nova  airborne lidar bathymeter from our Mississippi office, sharing time in our NY office. We are very excited to have Dr. Whorton on board as he brings great technical and managerial expertise to this role from his time as working at NASA and Teledyne. Dr. Whorton earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and joined NASA to work on the dynamics and control of space systems, becoming Chief of the Guidance, Navigation and Mission Analysis Branch at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. He branched into the world of remote sensing in 2009 when   Teledyne Bro wn Engineering (TBE)  made him Principal Investigator for the  Multiple User System for Earth Sensing (MUSES)  instrument pointing system for the International Space Station (ISS), a role that he maintains to this day. As President of Teledyne Optech, Inc., Dr. Whorton brings his experience in project management and remote sensing to our marine, survey and camera imaging teams.

Dr. Mark Whorton brings both technical and managerial know-how from his work at NASA and TBE.

David Collison retires as Asia-Pacific Regional Sales Manager

This October, Teledyne Optech says goodbye to David Collison, our Regional Sales Manager for Asia-Pacific, who worked through many of the region's recent technological and political changes. Starting his career in the late 1970s, David was part of the transition from optical mechanical to analytical photogrammetry, and participated in the paradigm shift that moved Asian mapping away from government-only systems to a mixture of government and private industry. Working abroad in Hong Kong, Germany and Singapore over 19 years, David was an early participant in China and provided technical support to their National and Provincial Bureaus of Surveying and Mapping in the mid-1980s. He also supported the introduction of softcopy photogrammetry throughout Asia and provided technical assistance to state/defense mapping agencies in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam and Korea. When lidar technology arrived, David immediately saw its usefulness for penetrating South-East Asia's dense tropical jungles and precisely measuring Australia's wide open spaces.  He supported the emergence of private sector mapping in Indonesia by providing lidar solutions to a range of companies in ASEAN's most open and competitive mapping market, and also supplied airborne lidar systems to the Philippines' DREAM project, the region's largest lidar mapping initiative. Teledyne Optech thanks David for his tireless effort in South-East Asia, and wishes him all the best in his retirement!
