Cityworks and Nearmap Partner to Add HD-Quality Visuals to Public Asset Management

November 15th, 2019 by Susan Smith

Nearmap’s high-resolution aerial imagery and Cityworks announced a partnership last week that joins lifelike, 2D and 3D, HD-quality visuals with a GIS-centric asset management system that helps organizations oversee assets, maintenance, permits and licenses for public asset management.

Cities who manage project workflows can visualize Nearmap high resolution vertical imagery directly from Cityworks without needing to launch a new browser or go outside the application. Once the city planner sees the clear imagery, they can define new assets, overlay other data layers and build out the detail needed for projects. As a collaboration tool, Cityworks data and Nearmap imagery allows anyone in virtual teams who can access that project to see the data. As a result, this integrated technology is a game changer for city planners and GIS professionals as well as project managers and anyone involved in the city planning ecosystem.

Built exclusively on Esri® ArcGIS® technology, the Cityworks web GIS-centric™ platform combines the authoritative asset inventory in a geodatabase with business process applications for managing workflow, scheduling resources, and prioritizing activities.

Cityworks has tools for managing and tracking the work that regulates local government assets. The company simplifies the process to maintain an asset inventory and eliminates the need for data syncing interfaces and associated data normalization challenges.

Nearmap helps thousands of users conduct virtual site visits for deep, data-driven insights—enabling informed decisions, streamlined operations and robust bottom lines.

Karl Terrey, Product Manager, Partner Products for Nearmap, spoke with GISCafe Voice regarding the partnership of Cityworks and Nearmap.

What is the benefit of this partnership?

The integration of Nearmap and Cityworks allows users to streamline their workflow by managing assets remotely, and thereby reducing site visits with the use of clear and current aerial imagery. Nearmap imagery provides unprecedented total awareness of infrastructure.

What level of expertise is required to be able to access Cityworks with Nearmap?

Your Cityworks administrator sets up the integration, then any Cityworks user can access it. The integration is fully documented and supported, so integration is a straightforward step by step process.

What types of projects benefit from this partnership?

Virtually every project will benefit, but most beneficial will be those that work with roads, sidewalks, pavement management, traffic lights, assets in the public right-of-way, buildings, terrain, parks and vegetation, striping, and signs.

What tools does Cityworks use to bring in disparate data sets to be integrated into a government’s existing data?

For our integration, Cityworks uses an API to stream in our imagery. It is then very easy to overlay a governments existing GIS data of assets on top of the high resolution imagery,

Will Nearmap fly certain regions more frequently to add value to specific projects?

Give an example if appropriate. Nearmap flies appropriate coverage areas regularly depending on size of region and population. One benefit of Nearmap coverage for Cityworks users is the regular coverage multiple times per year in both leaf-off and leaf-on conditions. It is usually unnecessary to fly custom regions.

Do you have examples of collaboration achieved by the partnership with Nearmap?

Yes. Matthew W Bradbury, GIS administrator for the city of Redlands, CA says “Nearmap affords us the ability to have a birds-eye view of our city not just once a year, but several times per year, at a resolution that is rarely obtainable within our budget. Going with Nearmap just makes sense for our GIS applications across the organization.”  Angela Doede from City Grand Rapids, Application Administrator City of Grand Rapids, noted, “With the rapid expansion in Grand Rapids, Nearmap provides current imagery that allows us to emulate changes of projects and infrastructure while reducing field site visits.”

Is the new dataset from Nearmap part of the cost of Cityworks or is there additional cost?

Users use their Nearmap account. The integration authenticates their Nearmap account and they consume imagery per their account setup. Most if not all users use Nearmap imagery for multiple purposes and several applications including ArcGIS.

Nearmap provides access to an extensive library of current and historical imagery; including vertical, panorama, oblique and 3D images.
