clauter_spar3d.pngGreetings,

Even though I haven't been able to get my hands on one of the new lidar-containing iPad pros because our state is on lockdown, that hasn't stopped a bunch of early adopters from giving it a try. Thankfully, they're sharing their results (and detailed teardowns) so we've pulled together some of the best we've found into a follow-up piece for the curious.

P.S. One more reminder that there is still plenty of time to get in on next week's " The Future of Lidar" webinar. It has an all-star panel lineup that I think SPAR 3D readers would appreciate... so check it out!

Note: For information regarding SPAR 3D and COVID-19 please see the regular updates here. Stay safe and be well!

The news from Apple two weeks ago was met with some surprise last week when they announced that the newest models of the iPad Pro would contain a lidar sensor that was capable of scanning up to 5 meters away, aimed towards improving AR applications. Since its release, a trickle (and then a flood) of iPad lidar demos have appeared online, as well as some new information.

AUTOMATING REALITY CAPTURE

By Carla Lauter

When construction sites are not captured and digitized while construction is in progress, there can be unforeseen and time-consuming impacts, especially when contractors are trying check their work. Automation and robotics startup Scaled Robotics is bringing automation to reality capture specifically geared towards construction that is in progress. Their automatic robot-mounted progress monitoring system can take what once used to be an imprecise task and turn it into a value-added dataset that helps workers to prioritize tasks, work smarter, and reduce re-work.

A myriad of 3D companies and designers have found creative solutions and ways to help with the global COVID-19 pandemic, but one intrepid inventor has taken a different path – using lasers to help encourage social distancing. Its design is amazingly simple – and familiar to anyone who’s ever wondered how Lidar works. A laser shines at a rotating mirror projecting a bright visible perimeter to remind people to socially distance during this pandemic.

VISUALIZATION

Niantic, the company responsible for the architecture for several popular AR games - including Pokémon Go and Harry Potter  - picked up 6D.ai in what some could view as a direct challenge to Apple’s recent AR investments. 6D.ai is best known for creating 3D meshes of the world in which AR content can be responsive to their environments and persist in a more realistic way.
