LINK-GIS Hires Woolpert to Provide New Aerial Mapping of Kentucky Counties

The firm will collect imagery, lidar and hydrologic data to support multiple stakeholders.

COVINGTON, Ky., April 30, 2020 — (PRNewswire) —

COVINGTON, Ky., April 30, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ --  Woolpert has been contracted by the LINK-GIS Partnership, a multi-jurisdictional GIS consortium in northern Kentucky, to provide new digital aerial imagery, lidar and planimetric data, including new hydrologic data, for Kenton and Campbell counties.

The seamless dataset will support the planning and development needs of the consortium's partners, contributors and clients. These include dozens of cities, courts, universities, businesses, police departments, health districts, fire districts and school districts, as well as the Northern Kentucky Water District and Sanitation District No. 1.

Woolpert Senior Vice President and Market Director Jeff Lovin said the hydrologic data collected under this contract is in line with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Hydrography Dataset version 2.1, Elevation-derived Hydrography Specifications. The elevation-derived hydrography data will be collected as lines and polygons that form a connected hydrology dataset, which is horizontally and vertically integrated into a lidar-derived elevation surface.

Among its applications, this hydrologic data will be used to map and model the drainage network in this rapidly developing urban area.

"With the Ohio River, a challenging terrain and ever-increasing hardscape, Kenton and Campbell counties generate great volumes of stormwater runoff," Lovin said. "This data will aid Northern Kentucky Sanitation District No. 1 in managing stormwater runoff."

Trisha Brush, the GIS director for Planning and Development Services of Kenton County, said LINK-GIS has been around for 35 years and its geospatial data and applications continue to grow.

"With an ever-changing built environment, having current imagery, lidar and planimetric products at our fingertips is a game-changer for economic growth in Northern Kentucky," Brush said. "This collaborative project supports the LINK-GIS partners by providing the best data possible in order to support and serve the citizens in Kenton and Campbell counties. The use of this data to support local government, businesses and academic activities will show that Northern Kentucky is open for business."

Woolpert is currently processing this data, which was collected within a two-week window in early March.

"We were contracted late in the season but were able to complete the collection efficiently, flying all of the imagery in one day and all of the lidar in another day to avoid leaf-on conditions," Lovin said. "We're honored to work with the LINK-GIS Partnership to support the many robust and forward-thinking GIS and geospatial services they provide."
