Anthony Schirripa Honored with the 2021 Edward C. Kemper Award

WASHINGTON – Dec. 9, 2020 – The Board of Directors and the Strategic Council of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are honoring Anthony Schirripa, FAIA, with the 2021 Edward C. Kemper Award.

The Edward C. Kemper Award, named in honor of the AIA’s first executive director, is given annually to an architect who has contributed significantly to the profession through service to the AIA.

Drawing on his firm management expertise as a leader at Gensler and Mancini Duffy, Schirripa has radically transformed AIA New York. Having held a number of important chapter leadership positions, including president in 2010, Schirripa was pivotal in laying the financial groundwork for New York’s Center for Architecture. Completed ahead of schedule and on budget, the center concept was emulated by nearly 30 chapters across the country. His guidance also led to a three-fold increase in the chapter’s surplus, healthy membership growth, and the launch of the Design Awards Luncheon during 2018, a marquee event that drew hundreds of attendees and raised more than $1 million to support chapter operations.

At the national level, Schirripa has served on the AIA’s Board of Directors as the New York Regional Director from 2012-2014 and a Director-at-Large in 2016. He played a key role on the board’s Governance Task Force, which developed a new governance model and structure that responded nimbly to the AIA’s repositioning efforts. In 2017, he was appointed to the ArchiPAC Steering Committee and has worked tirelessly to raise funds to support architects’ voices in an increasingly difficult political landscape.
