Construction Specifications Institute Foundation Expands Let's Build Construction Camp for Girls, Modeled After Successful Program

Camp introduces girls and young women to careers in the building industry

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 23, 2021 — (PRNewswire) —

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Expansion is underway for the Let's Build Construction Camp for Girls, a successful five-year camp developed by the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) to interest school-age girls in becoming architects, engineers, electricians, carpenters or any other building industry professional. The CSI Foundation is encouraging 127 CSI chapters nationwide to offer the camps as a way to recruit women to the profession. The industry faces a projected shortage of one million workers over the next two years, according to the Construction Labor Market Analyzer.

The camp is modeled after a program created by the CSI Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter in Pennsylvania. During the past five years, more than 70 girls and young women experienced the challenges, joys, confidence-building and sense of fulfillment that building industry professionals have every day. They explored a variety of jobs related to architecture, engineering, carpentry, and more.

"Our hope is that the real-world training offered through our Let's Build Construction Camps provides young women with the insight and the interest to learn more about the industry and make professional connections with members in their CSI Chapters," said Joe Anetrella, Chair of the CSI Foundation Board.

"The opportunities for women in construction are immense, and the Let's Build Construction Camps expose girls to great paying jobs," said Velma Hart, CSI Foundation Chief Operating Officer. "Plus, salaries of women in construction are nearly identical to what men earn, which means women can make nearly as much as men do, which cannot be said for most other industries," she added.
