Dr. Mark Palmer of Strategic Scientific Operations at Medtronic, plc. to Keynote ASSESS 2022 Congress

ASSESS: Analysis, Simulation, and Systems Engineering Software Strategies to enable a significant increase in usage and benefit of these technologies

Clarkesville, GA ASSESS Initiative, a broad-reaching multi-industry initiative to facilitate a revolution of enablement that will vastly increase the availability and effectiveness of Engineering Simulation is proud to announce that Dr. Mark Palmer, Distinguished Scientist & Lead in Strategic Scientific Operations at Medtronic, plc., will be a keynote speaker for the upcoming ASSESS 2022 Congress, to be held at The Georgian Terrace Hotel, in Atlanta, GA May 1st-3rd, 2022. Dr. Palmer’s keynote presentation’s title is “The Role of Computer Modelling and Simulation of Digital Transformation in Healthcare.”

“The healthcare industry is entering a new era where computer modeling and simulation are critical for supporting the development of medical devices as well as the digital ecosystem around them,” said Dr. Palmer, Distinguished Scientist in Strategic Scientific Operations at Medtronic. “ I have been involved with the ASSESS Initiative for several years now.  The interaction with thought leaders in the simulation space from different industries enabled by ASSESS has been extremely beneficial to our efforts and future planning.”

Mark Palmer, MD, PhD received his BS in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. Subsequently, Dr. Palmer attended the University of Michigan where he received an MSE in Mechanical Engineering, MS in Biomedical Engineering ultimately completing the Medical Scientist Training Program with an MD and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Palmer spent three years as an entrepreneur before returning to the University of Michigan as a faculty member with appointments in both Biomedical Engineering and Kinesiology collaborating with the Chair of Orthopedic Surgery. In 2014, Dr Palmer was recruited to Medtronic where his current role within Corporate Core Technologies includes leading an internal team of advanced modeling and simulation consultants servicing the global enterprise, manages external collaborations, and leads the strategy and platform technologies for realistic human simulation.   Dr. Palmer also serves as a member of the Enterprise AI Working Group and leads the Enterprise Modeling and Simulation Working Group where he regularly reports to the R&D Council, Clinical Research Council, Executive Committee and the Board of Directors on the long-range R&T Strategy for Modeling & Simulation. Extramurally, Dr.Palmer serves on the National Association of Finite Element Methods and Standards (NAFEMS) Business Impact Working Group and Industry Advisory Boards for American Society for Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and the international CompBioMed Consortium.  He also represents Medtronic on the ASME Verification & Validation 40 Standard for Modeling and Simulation and the ASME Verification and Validation 70 Standard for AI and Machine Learning.

Dr. Palmer holds 2 patents in computational modeling, has 15 publications on the application of modeling and simulation in leading Biomechanics, Physiology, and Orthopedic journals, and he has served as an invited speaker or presenter at over 70 national and international conferences.

“We are very honored and excited to have Mark Palmer present at our Congress,” says Joe Walsh, CEO & Co-Founder of the ASSESS Initiative. “Mark is an innovator and thought leader related to expanded use of Engineering Simulation in biomedical applications and I am looking forward to his presentation.”

The ASSESS 2022 Congress is the 5th annual congress for ASSESS organized to “enable” both strategies and relationships related to significantly increasing the use and benefit of Engineering Simulation. Key business drivers are forcing a “simulation revolution” to overcome the issue of required expertise which is limiting the expansion of Engineering Simulation usage. The theme of the ASSESS 2019 Congress is “Advancing the Engineering Simulation Revolution.”

Registration for the ASSESS 2022 Congress is by invitation only and is limited to 110 attendees. Registration will close either when all available seats are taken but no later than April 22, 2022.

The ASSESS Initiative was formed to bring together key players, both users and developers of simulation software, to guide and influence the software tool strategies for performing model-based analysis, simulation, and systems engineering with a vision “To significantly expand the use and benefit of software tools for model-based analysis, simulation, and systems engineering in the engineering applications domain.”

The ASSESS Initiative Membership program provides the ability for the ASSESS Initiative to expand its efforts and community benefits beyond the annual congress. The ASSESS Membership Program is appropriate for all organizations engaged in Analysis, Simulation, and Systems Engineering activities related to Engineered products & processes. The ASSESS Membership Program is offered in individual or group memberships. Active ASSESS Initiative Members receive access to Members Only content on the ASSESS website and a discount on the ASSESS Congress Registration Fees.

About the ASSESS Initiative
