PLW Modelworks Automation of Discrete 3D City Model Creation

PLW Modelworks, LLC is known for their high-fidelity, geospecific 3D city models.  PLW produces 3D models utilizing proprietary software with a human in-the-loop to create their discrete, low-polygon-count, geolocated 3D city models.

PLW prides itself on creating new technology to meet its clients’ needs.  Things such as being able to integrate mobile-mapping imagery to create extremely high-resolution 3D models at street-level with additional street furniture, adding material classification to models, adding window and door geometry to buildings, inserting floors into models, providing night scenes with realistic window/building lighting, feature attribution, exporting to CityGML 2.0 and CityGML 3.0, and more, have been created in response to customer requests.

In response to recent client requests, PLW is working on automation of their approach to high-fidelity, discrete 3D city model production.  One effort utilizes artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to automate parts of our existing workflow.  PLW has an Archive of discrete 3D city models covering thousands of sq. km. of various locations across the globe.  The Archive provides PLW with tens of millions of inputs: a ready source of training data for AI/ML algorithms.

Another effort incorporates photogrammetric mesh processing techniques into its proprietary software.  A client recently desired to convert an existing textured mesh product to low-polygon-count discrete 3D city models, so PLW created a software plugin, called Mesh2PLW, that enables them to automatically extract vectors from the textured mesh into the PLW environment for further processing.
