SGI Powers Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging Demo for Editing Oracle Spatial Data at GEOINT Symposium

Showcased Solutions Leverage SGI Oracle Expertise

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GEOINT 2007, Booth 639 -- SGI (Nasda: SGIC) will team up with Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging at the GEOINT Symposium in San Antonio, Texas, where the two companies will demonstrate joint technology solutions for geospatial intelligence collaboration and integration to support national security applications.

Produced and sponsored by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF), the GEOINT Symposium features technologies designed to enhance national defense and intelligence. Exhibits showcased at the event will run on SGI(R) Altix(R) servers and will include spatial data editing solutions leveraging SGI's experience in optimizing Oracle applications. Applications will include Leica ADE, a product suite containing Web-based and mobile enterprise solutions for editing Oracle Spatial data in both a connected and disconnected environment, and ERDAS IMAGINE(R), a remote sensing solution designed for manipulating, processing and understanding imagery. Leica Geosystems will also demonstrate the Beta release of Leica TITAN, an online solution for sharing geospatial and location-based content in a single, secure environment as well as the Leica Photogrammetry Suite, RedSpider Suite and Image Web Server.

Compared to the desktop environment in which Leica Geosystems previously ran its geospatial applications, the Windows(R)-based SGI(R) Altix(R) XE240s used for the demonstration, powered by dual core Intel(R) Xeon(R) technology with Intel 3.0 gigahertz chip sets and fiber-channel connected SGI InfiniteStorage array, delivers significantly faster performance. The SGI InfiniteStorage 4500 included in the demo system is designed to address the high performance, scalability and availability requirements crucial to geospatial computing applications. Additionally, the demonstration will provide an opportunity for Leica Geosystems to highlight its strength in vector editing by tapping into SGI's extensive experience with the Oracle database.

"SGI is a leader in helping organizations work with massive data and complex business processes using Oracle applications," said Kurt Schwoppe, vice president, Defense Solutions, Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging. "We believe that using the SGI infrastructure for our Oracle-based vector and image serving makes it possible for us to deliver the highest possible performance and spotlight our strength in enterprise geospatial technology."

Oracle(R) Spatial serves as a foundation for deploying enterprise-wide spatial information systems, and web-based and wireless location-based applications. It provides data management for location information such as road networks, wireless service boundaries, and geocoded customer addresses that are driving innovative product development in the emerging online, wireless, and in-vehicle telematics markets. These location-based services in Oracle 9 extend existing Oracle-based applications by allowing users to easily incorporate location information directly in their applications and services. Oracle Spatial is an option for Oracle Enterprise Edition that provides advanced spatial features to support high-end GIS and LBS solutions. SGI's global shared memory works with Oracle Spatial to enable near real-time availability of location-based data.

"Verified test results show SGI Altix to be among the industry's fastest, most scalable systems for multi-tier applications running Oracle Database 10g," said Bill Mannel, director of systems marketing, SGI. "The GEOINT technology demo will pair our on-demand flexibility and scalability with Leica ADE's Oracle Spatial expertise. It will highlight the strengths of both technologies in delivering mission critical data regarding geospatial intelligence."
