Avid Deko 5.2 Debuts Support for Leading 3D Formats

LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Apr 20, 2009 -- NAB (Booth #SU902) -- Avid® (NASDAQ: AVID) today unveiled version 5.2 of Avid Deko® 3000, an on-air graphics package that supports the industry-standard FBX and Collada formats, enabling customers to easily import and playback a broader range of 3D models and animations from leading applications such as Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Softimage 7.5 and MAXON CINEMA 4D. Now, customers can leverage existing skills and toolsets without having to burden staff with learning new 3D tools. Today's announcement represents another milestone in Avid's advancements to provide more open solutions for customers.

"By using proven industry interchange formats like Collada and FBX, Avid is providing tremendous incentive for customers to invest in the new Deko offerings," said Jeff Sargeant, a 3D artist and the creative director of design firm, Sargeant Inc. "For broadcasters, this openness in Deko is a huge benefit because it greatly expands the talent pool they can draw from when it comes to finding the best 3D artists. It's a win for artists as well, because it opens up a market they may have previously been excluded from as a result of the specific software they use."

How Deko Version 5.2 Works

-- Customers import models from 3D creation systems into Deko and combine
the models with live and editable text and image layers, which
automatically map to the replaceable textures from the original. The model
maintains specialized 3D treatments for geometry, lighting and animation
and plays out as expected in the Deko environment.
-- Power Clips are mapped to 3D models, enabling high-end visual effects
like animating logos or headshots on the 3D model, without the need for
costly third-party support to get them on the air.
