Pitney Bowes Recognizes Innovation With 2008 Invention of the Year Award

STAMFORD, Conn. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 2, 2009 Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) announced that a team of four employees was honored with the Company’s 2008 Invention of the Year Award. Arthur Berrill, Edward Dewald, John Dove and retired employee George Christopher Moon were recognized for their work in developing an integrated platform for providing geographic location based services to a mobile communication device, such as a phone.

Pitney Bowes’ annual Invention of the Year Award recognizes the achievements of its technology community and the importance of innovation to the Company’s success. Each year, a panel of judges reviews those nominations from the patents issued to Pitney Bowes inventors during the previous year and selects the winner from these patents. This year’s winning invention was selected from 88 patents and it is the first time an invention originating with an acquired company has won this award.

“Our customers depend on innovation to meet the fast-paced requirements of a competitive marketplace,” noted Pitney Bowes Chairman, President and CEO Murray D. Martin. “Throughout our 89-year history, Pitney Bowes has transformed the industry many times over with innovative new products and services. This innovative invention represents potential future growth areas and new application platforms for our location intelligence solutions.”

The integrated platform includes a routing module that forwards the service requests and Global Positioning System (GPS) data obtained from the mobile device to an appropriate module for determining the responses and transmitting them back to the mobile device. Examples of service requests based on geospatial considerations include:

  • Where is the nearest gas station?
  • What is the name of the street I am on?
  • Who are the occupants of the building I am in front of?
  • Are there any coupons available for the store that I am in?
  • Send me a map of my present location.

In an era when the need for timely and relevant information is at a premium, Pitney Bowes location and communication intelligence solutions enable organizations to more effectively locate, connect and communicate with customers in today’s global markets.

Pitney Bowes’ intellectual property portfolio includes important patents worldwide in areas such as ticket printing, document management, cellular phone payment, encryption, ink jet printing, mailing, and shipping.
