Iowa DOT Drives Web Mapping Applications with ArcGIS Server

Redlands, California—June 11, 2009—Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) uses many tools to produce and maintain its geospatial data. To disseminate this geospatial data from Oracle Spatial and other geographic information system (GIS) formats throughout the organization, Iowa DOT has chosen ESRI's ArcGIS Server and its Image extension. The ESRI software solution will serve as a data hub for DOT's desktop GIS software and Web mapping applications while providing the tools for building and maintaining its service layer.

With the Web mapping functionality in ESRI's ArcGIS Server, more than 1,000 Iowa DOT employees will now be able to access roadway, rail, trail, and aviation data from Oracle, raster, and other GIS data formats. In addition, Iowa DOT's development team can now easily share work, as ESRI's ArcGIS API for JavaScript brings together Java and .NET applications. Programmers can just click a point on an interactive map or run a spatial query to immediately retrieve the necessary information.

"Iowa DOT looked at many server products, and ESRI's ArcGIS Server gave us off-the-shelf Web map and Web feature services plus the added benefit of ArcGIS services and a powerful JavaScript API," says Eric Abrams, GIS coordinator, IT Division, Iowa DOT.

ArcGIS API for JavaScript is a browser-based application programming interface for developing high-performance, easy-to-use mapping applications. The API, hosted by ArcGIS Online, allows users to easily embed maps in Web pages and includes extensions for Bing maps (formerly known as Virtual Earth) and Google Maps.

The ArcGIS Server Image extension optimizes data processing, providing a nearly instantaneous Web site view of imagery upon request. With ArcGIS Server Image extension, Iowa DOT can take raw or preprocessed imagery and immediately deliver it as a Web service to employees, clients, and project stakeholders.

A complete and integrated server-based GIS, ArcGIS Server allows organizations to distribute maps and GIS capabilities via Web mapping applications and services to improve internal workflows and communicate vital issues. Transportation professionals the world over have discovered and embraced GIS as an important tool in managing, planning, evaluating, and maintaining transportation systems.
