Wayne County, N.C. Utilizes GTG for ArcGIS® Server Migration and Upgrade

January 04, 2010 -- GOLDSBORO, N.C. – Geographic Technologies Group (GTG) recently assisted Wayne County, N.C. in migrating to the most current version of the ArcGIS Server platform—ArcGIS® 9.3.1.

This migration included pulling all current data out of the County’s older version of ESRI’s ArcSDE®, reorganizing it and loading it into the new version of ArcSDE. This included development of an ArcSDE raster dataset for quicker image processing. All ArcGIS Server software was installed in a virtual server environment. The virtual environment allows Wayne County to allocate resources to multiple applications thereby maximizing the County’s hardware investment.

In addition to the ArcGIS Server migration, GTG updated the County’s cadastral management group to the latest version of the ArcGIS Desktop software. This is enabling the staff to take full advantage of the new functionality and features offered by ArcGIS 9.3.1 in their day-to-day jobs. GTG also migrated and reconfigured the County’s Geo Blade software to take advantage of the new ArcGIS Server environment. This reconfiguration has provided a three times reduction in panning, zooming, and screen redraw operations and increased overall productivity.

“It is important to keep up with the most current versions of the software,” said Brian R. Berdanier, GISP, the GIS Director at GTG. “There are always new enhancements and better tools to use. We are always looking for ways to increase performance for our clients.”

To perform the migration, GTG staff took existing information, offloaded it, and installed all new software to the virtual servers. They then took the information and uploaded it to the new virtual environment. All local machines were loaded with updated software for all of the editors. GTG then performed quality control procedures and system testing to ensure everything worked properly. After all testing was successfully completed, the system was rolled out to the user base, and the old servers were taken offline.

This upgrade and migration will allow Wayne County to see a significant return-on-investment. “With the updates in place, they will see an improved performance of all applications,” said Berdanier. This will save time and improve efficiency in the County.

With this project under their belt, Wayne County plans to begin several projects that will improve their organization. This includes the setup of a versioned editing environment for their cadastral and addressing editors. They also plan to work together with the City of Goldsboro to establish two-way replication for their street centerline and address point maintenance process. This will allow each organization to maintain the data for which they are responsible yet, at the same time, share it with the other organization.
