SmithGroup's Perry Elevated to Fellow of the American Institute of Architects

WASHINGTON, DC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Mar 04, 2010 -- SmithGroup is pleased to announce that Russell Perry, FAIA, LEED AP, managing director of the firm's Washington, DC office, has been elevated to the prestigious College of Fellows of The American Institute of Architects (AIA). The honor is awarded to members who have made significant contributions to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Perry will receive his medal of Fellowship on June 11, 2010 during the Investiture of Fellows Ceremony at the 2010 National AIA Convention and Design Expo, Miami.

Perry is an internationally recognized sustainable design and planning authority. Over half of his 30 years of award-winning project experience has focused on cutting-edge sustainable design. His environmental awareness and understanding of sustainable systems has guided design teams and clients to foster a balanced planning approach and promote innovative solutions. Presently, he serves as the green advisor to the integrated team for the California Pacific Medical Center Cathedral Hill Hospital in San Francisco, and has recently contributed to master plans for the Department of Homeland Security at St. Elizabeths in Washington, and two campuses for Indiana University.

Perry joined SmithGroup in 2005 from William McDonough + Partners, a firm he had co-founded 11 years prior. Perry's talent was familiar to many at SmithGroup; earlier in his career he was an employee and then principal at Keyes Condon Florance, which later merged with SmithGroup.

Perry earned a Master of Architecture degree from The University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Virginia.

The AIA College of Fellows was founded in 1952 by the Institute to stimulate fellowship among architects, promote the purposes of the AIA, and advance the profession of architecture. Advancement to Fellowship is the highest membership honor bestowed on a member of the AIA and reflects the member's contributions to the architectural profession. Out of a total AIA membership of nearly 81,000, there are fewer than 2,600 distinguished with the honor of Fellowship.

SmithGroup ranks as the 7th largest architecture and engineering firm in the U.S. (Building Design + Construction "Giants" survey, July 2009) and employs 800. The firm is composed of client industry-focused practices serving the higher education, science and technology, workplace, healthcare, and cultural markets. With 346 LEED accredited professionals and 43 LEED certified projects, SmithGroup is a national leader in sustainable, environmentally intelligent design.
