Teen Entrepreneurs Named as Finalists in Technovation, Compete in World Pitch Event at Intel Headquarters

Beyond Learning to Code, Technovation Teaches Entrepreneurship Skills

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 13, 2014 — (PRNewswire) — Today, 10 teams of students from across five continents were announced as finalists in Technovation, a global technology entrepreneurship program and mobile app competition for young women. The finalists will pitch their startup ideas to industry experts at the Technovation World Pitch event on June 18 at Intel® headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The teams, comprised of students at the middle school, high school and university levels, will compete for a share of $20,000 in seed funding.

Technovation is an intensive three-month curriculum that teaches female students computer science and leadership skills as they develop mobile app startups to address problems in their communities. This year, more than 3,500 young women from 45 countries around the globe enrolled in Technovation. Participants learned about product ideation, market research, basic programming, business plan development and creating a compelling video pitch.

"We've all heard about the shortage of women engineers. But the numbers are even worse for women in technology leadership roles—only seven percent of tech company founders are women," said Samantha Quist, senior director of Technovation. "Technovation reshapes young women's perceptions of the technology industry, empowering them to see themselves as creators of technology, rather than just consumers of it."
