Apical Announces Accreditation Program for ART, a Platform for People to Interact with Devices in Smart Homes and Cities

Apical will provide accreditation and testing of smart visual sensors and cameras to enable an assurance to systems OEMS and service providers

LONDON, Jan. 11, 2016 — (PRNewswire) —   Apical Ltd., a developer of advanced imaging and vision technology, today announced the launch of its accreditation program for the ART® platform. The program is aimed at manufacturers who wish to develop ART-compliant devices, such as smart cameras and smart sensors, which are capable of interfacing with the ART software platform.

Apical's ART is a unifying platform for the interaction of people and devices within the smart home and beyond, based on latest advances in machine learning technology. It is based on the real-time analysis of people's trajectory, pose, gesture and identity at the edge (within a device) using inputs from conventional image sensors. Apical's unique embedded analytics engine, Spirit, enables far richer and more accurate analysis than has been possible until now.

"ART is a smart platform based on state-of-the-art technology which requires a coherent ecosystem in place in order to deliver real value to the end user," said Michael Tusch, CEO of Apical. "We have studied closely what has and has not worked in previous attempts in the smart home and smart city, and believe that ART has the potential to revolutionize these domains. We are strongly committed to supporting our ecosystem partners and ensuring that ART-based services achieve the highest -- and most predictable -- performance levels possible. This program is the first step in achieving those goals."

Apical is working with partners to deploy ART-based services in the latter part of 2016. Under the program, Apical will make available reference designs, SDKs and other support for OEMs and ODMs to create ART-compatible smart devices. Apical will further validate such devices to ensure that they meet the accuracy and interoperability requirements to drive significant volume adoption via end-user services.

"With its real-time analytics, the ART platform demonstrates the next generation of smart home technologies," said Stuart Sikes, President at Parks Associates. "ART's capabilities for accurately detecting people and their behavior in real time can assist in eradicating false alarms in home monitoring, and opens tremendous possibilities for caring for the elderly at home."

An ART-based service based on accredited devices provides users with accurate notifications of the presence and identity of people within and around their home and enables accurate and authenticated gesture controls anywhere and a multitude of other value-driving services.
