AltaLink to create 3D base map of power system

Jul 18, 2017 -- AltaLink has recently awarded a multi-year contract to NM Group for creating a 3D base map of their entire power network that will be maintained through innovative technologies. The strategic partnership will create an accurate asset library for 13,000 km of high voltage network, to validate line ratings and ensure system reliability.

The project will use aerial LiDAR data to produce a precise 3D model and then in future years update this to incorporate any scheduled network alterations; ensuring the continued validity of the dataset. This approach will also help to manage risk by identifying any unplanned changes to the system. Examples include unauthorised buildings in the right-of-way or locations of vegetation growing too close to conductors.

Nick Ferguson, Senior Vice President at NM Group, commented on the project “We are very pleased that AltaLink has selected NM Group to model their network. We pioneered an intelligent approach to cost effectively create and maintain a 3D base map of electricity networks and we are delighted AltaLink see the value in this”.
