Unity Technologies Announces Integration With Google’s ARCore to Give Developers the Tools to Easily Create AR Experiences

Unity SDK provides creators with access to the world’s largest network of AR capable devices

SAN FRANCISCO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 29, 2017 — Unity Technologies ( https://unity3d.com/), the creator of the world’s most popular creation engine that powers 2/3rds of all Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) experiences, announced today that its worldwide community of developers can now download the preview of Google’s ARCore SDK for Unity. The SDK, which leverages native integration with Unity 2017.2 Beta 9 and higher, allows Unity developers to easily create AR experiences for Android devices, as well as add AR to existing Android apps to help drive user engagement and revenue growth.

“We’re excited to work closely with Google to expand our Augmented Reality offering to our developer community and look forward to further exploration in this emerging landscape,” said Scott Flynn, Director of AR/VR Development at Unity Technologies. “We believe the accessibility of Augmented Reality presents a unique opportunity to reach a massive global audience through innovative applications and new possibilities for content delivery.”

Unity powers the world’s most immersive and creative AR experiences today, and now the creators that are driving innovation in this space can optimize and extend their AR creations across the Android ecosystem. Google used Unity to build ARCore demos that showed off the capabilities of the SDK, including an AR tabletop demo and a demo with Oz characters, which can be viewed here.

“We've been working closely with Unity on Virtual and Augmented Reality for some time now. We share a vision in making this technology accessible to everyone, and a big part of that is giving developers the tools and platforms on which to build great immersive experiences,” said Clay Bavor, VP of Augmented and Virtual Reality, Google. “With ARCore, we're taking the next step towards that goal, and we're excited to be working together again to bring these new capabilities to developers large and small.”

The ARCore SDK for Unity is an Augmented Reality software solution that was developed in partnership with Google to ensure optimal AR performance for current and future Android devices. ARCore will run on millions of devices, starting today with the Pixel and the Samsung Galaxy S8, running 7.0 Nougat and above. The ARCore SDK for Unity gives developers the power to scale their existing apps and add AR integrations that extend its capabilities, or to build a brand new AR experience. Unity exists to democratize development, solve hard problems and enable success -- three core values that are the driving forces of Unity’s adoption by millions of creators. Unity powers more than 50% of all new mobile games and interactive content made with Unity reaches nearly 3 billion devices worldwide.
