xyzt.ai Delivers Maritime Location Intelligence at an Unprecedented Scale

07 April 2020, Leuven, Belgium - AIS or Automatic Identification System is a technology used for vessels to communicate their status, including GPS location, activity (“Engaged in Fishing”, “Underway using Engine”,…), their draught, etc. It is an extremely valuable data source for maritime analysts to gain Situational Awareness at sea. It is the input data for Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).

When ships are close to shore, AIS is communicated through terrestrial receivers. But AIS is also communicated via satellites (S-AIS) thanks to satellite companies such as Spire, exactEarth,… Recently Spire also introduced Dynamic AIS (D-AIS) where receivers are installed on moving vessels in busy shipping lanes (hence the term dynamic) collecting data when no satellites are visible and communicating the collected data in near real-time when there is satellite connectivity.

All this data quickly piles up to billions and billions of location records. To give you an idea, marinetraffic.com’s Vessel Database has over 1 million vessels registered. Assume these broadcast their position every minute, this amounts to a staggering 1.44 billion records/day (60 minutes/hour x 24 hours/day x 1 million vessels).

So how to analyze this data? How to analyze fishing patterns and detect illegal fishing, or overfishing. How to get alerted on illegal trafficking? Or how to predict arrival times for cargo shipments? With xyzt.ai we have built a unique technology that finally makes analyzing billions of location records possible at both the overview and detail level.

Get a sneak peak in the video where we show how to visually analyze over 2 billion records, doing spatio-temporal hot spot analysis, histogram aggregation, filtering on status and attributes. All at below 1 second update latency in the queries. Or get Email Contact for a live demo.
