NV5 Geospatial Begins Climate Change Pilot Project for Caribbean Nations

Contract with Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre Will Deliver Highly Accurate Lidar Data and Orthoimagery to Address Changing Geography and Support Resiliency Efforts

HOLLYWOOD, Fla., March 1, 2023 – NV5 Geospatial, North America’s most comprehensive geospatial science data firm, today announced that it will conduct aerial lidar and orthoimagery surveys across the Caribbean on behalf of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC). Funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), this pilot project will provide advanced geospatial data to help the island nations better understand natural and man-induced climate changes and develop programs to support resilience and sustainable development, and establish a foundation for future work.

"The Caribbean is uniquely impacted by climate change. Rising temperatures and sea levels, as well as more intense hurricanes, are threatening the lives, property and livelihoods of more than 40 million people who live among our two dozen island nations," said CCCCC Executive Director Dr. Colin Young. "We look forward to working with NV5 Geospatial to evaluate the effects of climate change across our unique region and build a long-term partnership to undertake additional projects in the future."

The project will cover project areas in Suriname, Guyana, Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Turks & Caicos and Belize. NV5 Geospatial will conduct topographic and topobathymetric lidar surveys, as well as orthoimagery, via a fixed-wing aircraft. Data collected will help CCCCC address the impact of climate variability and identify potentially hazardous impacts.

The project is complex, covering 10 sites spread across more than 3,000 kilometers, with mostly ocean between them. Other logistical considerations include the combination of microclimates inherent around tropical islands, highly variable weather conditions, cloud formations and jungles, some of which are in high relief areas or covering the entire area.

"The Caribbean islands have a varied geography, resulting in challenging surveys that NV5 Geospatial is uniquely qualified to handle," said Kurt Allen, vice president, NV5 Geospatial. "We are proud to support CCCCC's mission as part of our commitment to advancing environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives that require access to highly accurate geospatial data sets."
