Sonic Foundry Announces Mediasite Integration With Moodle

MADISON, Wis., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Mediasite module provides greater flexibility in publishing multimedia presentations to the Moodle open source platform

MADISON, Wis., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the recognized market leader for rich media webcasting and knowledge management, today announced the company has developed a Mediasite Content Module for Moodle, the fastest growing open source course management system in higher education. This new integration allows users to easily publish links to secure Mediasite presentations and catalogs within Moodle, facilitating access to online lectures and multimedia presentations from any Moodle course.

Many colleges and universities choose to integrate the patented Mediasite webcasting and lecture capture platform within a course management system (CMS). The CMS framework helps educators create collaborative online learning communities by organizing access to a full range of educational learning materials including recorded rich media lectures, assignments, quizzes, forums and wikis.

"Since we rely on Mediasite as our primary lecture delivery platform for our online courses, we are happy to hear this news. Seamless integration of the various elements of an online course, including the lecture, is very important to our faculty and students," said Thomas K. Miller, vice provost, distance education and learning technology applications at North Carolina State University.

According to The Campus Computing Project 2008 national survey, approximately one-fourth of information technology staff in U.S. higher education indicate a high likelihood that their institution could migrate to an open source learning management system by 2013.

With the Mediasite Content Module for Moodle, any Mediasite-recorded lecture can be published as learning content to the Moodle CMS. Students are provided anytime access to online lectures directly from their Moodle-managed courses including fully-synchronized audio, video and presentation materials. The module is already empowering educators to create a more flexible platform where they can personalize, customize and integrate their students' learning experiences.

The National Child Traumatic Stress Network at UCLA ( www.nctsn.org) used the module to successfully integrate Mediasite recordings with their Moodle platform to create the NCTSN Learning Center for Child and Adolescent Trauma ( http://learn.nctsn.org) according to Peter Kung, director of informatics and technology and Amber Stokes, manager, Learning Center for Child and Adolescent Trauma.

"This change of approach allowed us to focus on developing custom built course solutions and offering free continuing education credits for our audience. Users are now able to take courses and view presentations that interest them, print their certificates of completion and interact with each other using both Mediasite and Moodle functionality," said Kung. "We have streamlined our services, cut down on administrative overhead and now concentrate on offering the best child trauma research coupled with state-of-the-art technology."

With the company's higher education Mediasite community now topping 600 colleges and universities, Sonic Foundry is highlighting stories that exemplify the convergence of technology and education. Through webinars, news and speaking engagements, Mediasite users around the globe are sharing their best practices for using lecture capture to bridge time and distance, accelerate research and improve academic performance.

The packaged Mediasite Content Module for Moodle is now available for download at http://moodledemo.mediasite.com. System requirements are Moodle 1.9 and Mediasite EX Server 5.0.1.
