How about (in case of a brickwall) cut out a variety of single stones..a larger amount, so that they do not repeat too early. Then make a layout mask in black and white of where exactly to place the bricks and finally create mortar layer (via blur) under the bricks.

If you copy entire bricks you'll probably get even more of a pattern, I find it's better to use small (very small indeed) sections of a texture, tiny bits of a brick, rather than entire bricks - but if you want a totally smooth look you could just use one single brick to create a wall made of just that one brick - which rather defeats the purpose of using real photographic textures.

For a really smooth featureless texture, the best thing to do is to start with a really large photograph of a very big wall, and to chose one without much patterning visible in the original, that way you get a much smoother, less patterned look to the finished texture once it's tiled.

But if you want to do an old looking building then you need old looking bricks, and they are not smooth and featureless.
