Canadian Organizations Shine at the 2013 Esri International User Conference

Service New Brunswick, International Civil Aviation Organization and Enbridge Gas Distribution Receive Esri Special Achievement in GIS Awards

TORONTO – July 15, 2013 – Esri Canada congratulates Service New Brunswick, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Enbridge Gas Distribution for receiving Esri Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Awards. Selected from thousands of organizations worldwide, the awards recognize organizations that use ArcGIS, Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) platform, to improve our world. The awards were presented last week in front of a more than 14,000-strong crowd at the Esri International User Conference in San Diego, California.

“ArcGIS has evolved to support nearly all devices and technology platforms, and is accelerating the way we use geographic information to solve problems,” says Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada. “Service New Brunswick, the ICAO and Enbridge have embraced the power of ArcGIS to achieve new levels of efficiency, openness and collaboration. Their outstanding work is setting new standards for the GIS community.”

Service New Brunswick

Service New Brunswick (SNB) is the lead geomatics agency of New Brunswick that maintains the province’s land information infrastructure. The agency promotes efficient and open sharing of data with key partners and the public through GeoNB ( snb.ca/geonb), an ArcGIS-based geospatial gateway that provides free online access to the province’s data, aerial photos, maps and apps.

Through the site, the public can download more than 30 datasets, a dozen apps supporting programs such as wetland conservation and flood damage reduction, as well as more than 30 map services that they can integrate into their own Web apps. Since the portal was launched in 2009, public usage of provincial data has significantly increased, with the number of weekly visits to the site up from 5,000 in 2010 to more than 13,000 in 2012.

International Civil Aviation Organization Air Navigation Bureau

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets standards and regulations for worldwide civil aviation safety, security, efficiency, regularity and environmental protection. The ICAO Air Navigation Bureau uses ArcGIS to produce and disseminate navigational data to the United Nations specialized agency’s 191 Member States and their corresponding civil aviation authorities and operator communities.

ICAO maintains an extensive online gallery ( gis.icao.int/gallery) of maps and apps that help the public develop a better understanding of aeronautical issues and trends. They use story maps to explain numerous complex topics, including year-over-year changes in world traffic flows, air route design and development, progress on operational procedures implementation, global emissions mitigation and forecasts of the spread of viruses via air travel (prototype). The site provides the global aviation community with quick access to authoritative spatial data, supporting improved situational awareness and decision-making.

Enbridge Gas Distribution

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. has a more than 160-year history and is Canada's largest natural gas distribution company. Enbridge Gas Distribution delivers safe, reliable natural gas in more than 100 communities across Ontario and is a leader in promoting energy efficiency programs. It is owned by Enbridge Inc., a Canadian-based leader in energy transportation and distribution and one of the 2013 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations. Enbridge Inc. has been selected as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2013 and is one of Canada's Top 100 Employers. Enbridge Gas Distribution and its affiliates distribute natural gas to two million customers in Ontario, Quebec, New York State and New Brunswick.

Enbridge Gas Distribution recently replaced their legacy GIS system with ArcGIS and the ArcFM suite of utility GIS applications to improve decision-making across their enterprise. Since then, the utility has developed and deployed several geospatial apps to support key business processes including integrity management, customer connections, location of underground assets, and monitoring of pipeline pressure in real time. Enbridge Gas Distribution ensures that their GIS is always up to date by performing continuous updates to their spatial data. The utility is also designing and implementing other GIS apps to help further drive their business forward.
