Leica Pegasus:Two Mobile Mapping Contest encourages creative thinkers to measure in new ways

(Heerbrugg/Switzerland, 02 June 2014) - With the release of Pegasus:Two, the next generation mobile mapping solution, Leica Geosystems is also pleased to announce an exciting and challenging contest. Leica Geosystems would like to encourage creative thinkers to discover new ways of measuring the unlimited by participating in the Pegasus:Two Mobile Mapping Contest.

The lucky winner of this contest will receive free use of a Leica Geosystems’ Pegasus:Two mobile mapping system for 6 months plus 10,000 USD to spend on the project. The winner of the contest will be announced on August 8, 2014.

The Pegasus:Two contest is a global contest, open to anyone who chooses to enter. Employees of any companies developing, producing or distributing mobile mapping products that are considered direct competitors of Leica Geosystems Group are not eligible to participate.

Contest

All participants must submit a detailed proposal and a project timeline no later than July 31, 2014. Projects entries must use all six cameras plus the two optional sky and rear view cameras. Participants must also utilise the external timing output and sync signal with an alternative sensor. Any type of additional sensor can be leveraged, from a thermal camera, to ground penetrating radar, sonar, or even a pollution monitor and most importantly, participants are encouraged to use their imagination.

The project must include one span of at least 200 km in a continuous data mission and cover over 20 days of data collection, however, the project must be completed within the six month period from the announcement of the winner on August 8, 2014. The Leica Pegasus:Two does not require a modified vehicle and can be mounted on any car, train, bus, boat: just about anything mobile object. Entry submissions must support the advancement of humanity and cannot be connected in any way to military conflicts or applications.

“We are looking for creativity,” says Stuart Woods, vice president of mobile mapping for the Leica Geosystems Geospatial Division. “We want to see how far people can take our platform – the world has gotten smaller, but as human beings, we still have a lot to explore when it comes to measuring possibilities. StreetView is for Google, and Leica Geosystems equipment can do Streetview, but this is about measuring beyond Streetview – this is about acquiring large amounts of data and digesting that data – to bringing us one step further in making critical decisions, in real-time about our world – from transportation to infrastructure.”

All rights, title and interest in the proposals and in the project results and all intellectual property embodied therein will become at all times the sole and exclusive property of Leica Geosystems AG to use and exploit the proposal and project results without limitations with regard to time, area and content for all known and unknown ways of using and exploiting.

Leica is entitled to make the proposal and the project results publicly available.

The Leica Pegasus:Two combines cameras with LiDAR data to make a single calibrated, accurate 360° degree spherical view using one, easy-to-use interface and dataset. By continuing to develop hardware and software together, utilising the latest global positioning technology, and keeping the platform vehicle independent, the Leica Pegasus:Two evolves into a completely portable and highly accurate sensor platform – it is truly the only global mobile collection solution on the market.

The Leica Pegasus:Two is available as of today. Ordering information and details can be obtained from all authorised Leica Geosystems representatives. As the Leica Pegasus:Two mobile mapping system replaces the Leica Pegasus:One, Leica Geosystems customers using Pegasus:One can benefit from a defined upgrade to the Leica Pegasus:Two system, which is also immediately available.

Visitors of HXGN Live 2014 in Las Vegas will be able to view the Leica Pegasus:Two solution as well as the advanced prototype, Pegasus:T2, a trolley based mobile system weighing only 20 kg.
