Two hundred fifty students from the world's top universities will travel to San Francisco to present their business solutions to the unmet need of the century: early childhood education in urban slums. Their social enterprises will be judged on their potential to provide access to quality early childhood education to 10 million children under the age of 6 living in urban slums worldwide by the year 2020.

The top team selected from San Francisco will join the other regional finalists from the Hult campuses in Shanghai, Dubai, London, and Boston, as well as a wildcard entry from an online round. The six teams will then participate in an intensive six-week Hult Prize Accelerator in Cambridge, MA, where they will receive mentorship from the international business community and guidance on strategic planning as they prepare to launch and scale their new ventures. The final round of the competition will be held in New York in September at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, where President Bill Clinton will present the winning team with $1 million in startup capital.

The San Francisco panel is composed of Bay Area business and educational experts.  The judges include:

  • Kim Belshe, Executive Director, First 5 LA
  • Naomi Baer, COO, Net Impact
  • Sheryle Bolton, Former CEO, Sally Ride Foundation
  • Sheryl Chamberlain, Vice President Global Partner Executive, Capgemini
  • Carole Chase, Former Head, Primary School, San Domenico School

The seed capital we provide to up-and-coming impact-based startups is the differentiator. While we invest millions of dollars in seed capital in our winners, the journey of competing for the Hult Prize catalyzes an entire generation to do good through the creation of income-producing companies that service the world's poorest," said Ahmad Ashkar, CEO and Founder of the Hult Prize and a Hult alumni. "The San Francisco regional final will be very competitive and one to watch closely."
