Emapsite provides OS Open Map – Local via web mapping service

Emapsite customers are among the first to take advantage of the most detailed Ordnance Survey open data product so far.

Apr 29, 2015 -- Data managers at the location content provider have loaded, styled and enriched OS Open Map – Local as a dedicated layer of emapsite’s web mapping service (WMS).

The new vector dataset, released in beta form in March 2015, has an enhanced level of building detail compared with any other OS OpenData product.

It is designed as a backdrop for visualising location data and integrating third-party information.

Ordnance Survey has also included outlines of ‘Functional Sites’ such as schools, hospitals and transport facilities.

Instead of simply making the standard product available on its web platform for customers, emapsite has added extra content from other OS OpenData products - OS Vector Map District, OS Terrain 50 and Strategi - making it a feature-rich background map containing only OS OpenData.

The additional detail includes police stations, places of worship, leisure centres, sites of historic interest, masts, lighthouses and other landmarks.  Emapsite has also included contour lines and labelled the Functional Sites appropriately at different zoom levels.

Data Engineering Manager Liz Scott said: “We have enhanced the beta version of OS Open Map – Local to add value to our web mapping services. This is good news for our subscribers as it provides further contextual mapping on our website. It may be seen as an open data alternative to OS Vector Map Local and we are delighted to be among the first to make it available through WMS.”
