Flats and high-rise properties now in postcode data by allmapdata from Mapmechanics

When planning home deliveries or collections, businesses will often want to know not just the exact location of each postcode, but also whether it features low-rise properties or a high-rise apartment block. Delivering to tall buildings can have a significant impact on average delivery times, and hence on journey planning.

For such organisations, an invaluable new feature has been added by allmapdata (AMD) from Mapmechanics to its popular UK Unit Postcode Points dataset. This has long been one of the fundamental building blocks for retailers and logistics companies, who use it extensively for geocoding addresses (deriving coordinates from address and postcode).

Allmapdata (AMD) is renowned for its UK and worldwide mapping, geocoders and geodemographic data for business intelligence and geographic information systems (GIS).  The AMD team specialises in assembling popular datasets from multiple sources to answer real-world business requirements.

Its Unit Postcode Points data can now include a flag indicating whether or not properties are flats or high-rise buildings. This is one of a range of optional attributes now available with the data, which can also include fields showing whether the postcode lies on a Red Route (which could make parking difficult in London and Birmingham); how many delivery points lie within the postcode; how high the postcode is above sea level; the ceremonial county in which it lies (an example would be Middlesex); and what are the nearest railway stations, with their distance in kilometres from the unit postcode centre.

Since Unit Postcode Points data is compiled by allmapdata from Mapmechanics, the range of attributes need not stop there. The AMD team are experts in creating bespoke versions of the data to suit individual requirements - expanding postcode-related data into an increasingly powerful business intelligence tool.

The data is also more accessible than ever before, with options to purchase the data from Mapmechanics via  allmpadata.com in a wide range of formats from simple .csv to GIS and BI formats such as MapInfo or Tableau. Many of the subsets of the data are now also available for easy download directly from the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform, and there is a wide variety of licence options including developer licences, ensuring that users can incorporate the data in their own products.

Already, other attributes are available in the premium version, Unit Postcodes Plus, including delivery point counts (residential, non-residential and large user), number of PO boxes, administrative county, and district and ward codes when available. This data also shows the 2001 and 2011 Census output areas in which each postcode lies.

Unit Postcode Points data from allmapdata is known for its high degree of accuracy - to within 1 metre of the centre of each unit postcode (which is the most granular form of postcode, usually consisting of just a handful of addresses). It is used not just in delivery and collection applications, but also in activities such as terrain and elevation modelling, flood risk assessment, leaflet counts for doordrop applications, and "smart city" initiatives.

The x and y coordinates in the data are provided in British National Grid format, and also as latitude/longitude coordinates for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

UK Unit Postcode Points data is just one of a wide range of services and data products available from AMD, whose range of products can be viewed on its web site  www.allmapdata.com.
