prpl Foundation Launches First-Ever OpenWrt Summit 2015 in Dublin

Summit Will Help Increase Collaboration within Open Source Community

SANTA CLARA, CA, Sept. 22, 2015 –The  prpl Foundation today announced the  OpenWrt Summit – the first ever conference focusing exclusively on disruptive  OpenWrt technology – will take place in Dublin, Ireland on Oct. 8.  Designed to encourage growth and collaboration in the OpenWrt movement, the event is co-located with the Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE).

OpenWrt is an embedded operating system based on the Linux kernel, and primarily used on embedded devices to route network traffic. The main components are the Linux kernel,  util-linuxuClibc and  BusyBox. All components have been optimized for the limited storage and memory available in networked consumer systems. The compactness, simplicity and openness of the interface makes it uniquely suited for innovation outside of traditional network gateways.

“The OpenWrt Summit is about fully supporting the OpenWrt movement,” said Art Swift, president of the prpl Foundation, an open-source non-profit foundation focused on enabling next-generation datacenter-to-device portable software and virtualized architectures. “We’re seeing lots of innovation and product development, and a growing need for sharing of these achievements and collaboration around them.”

Cesare Garlati, chief security strategist at prpl Foundation and co-chair of the Mobile Working Group at Cloud Security Alliance, added that OpenWrt is uniquely positioned to become the Linux de facto standard for the Internet of Things (IoT).

“OpenWrt’s optimized network support and wide cross-platform portability are ideally suited for a whole new breed of connected devices. And the vibrant open source community behind the project guarantees openness and interoperability across heterogeneous architectures,” said Garlati.

OpenWrt Summit features a variety of speakers, technical sessions and “lightning talks” for all levels of experience in the community.

The Summit is planned to benefit anyone who wants to learn more about OpenWrt software and share their work with the core community. In particular, OpenWrt will be perfect for OpenWrt hackers, software developers maintaining OpenWrt packages, home users of OpenWrt, System on Chip (SoC) makers and system OEMs who leverage OpenWrt. The Summit is also relevant for all others interested in OpenWrt, free and open source wireless networking, or embedded Linux.

The OpenWrt Summit will be hosted at the Conference Centre Dublin. The Conference Centre Dublin (CCD) is a world-class convention venue in the heart of Dublin. The CCD is also the location of the Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE).

The OpenWrt Summit includes featured speakers, technical sessions and “lightning talks” for all levels of experience in the community. OpenWrt Summit's speakers have experience all over the OpenWrt community, including the core team, users, packagers and more. Speakers include:

  • Bedrich Kosata, head of Project Turris and chief science officer at CZ.NIC
  • Cesare Garlati, chief security strategist at prpl Foundation and co-chair of the Mobile Working Group at Cloud Security Alliance
  • Federico Capoano, developer at the Cineca Consortium in Rome, Italy, and an active participant in the OpenWISP project, municipal Wi-Fi and related open source projects
  • Jos Delbar, a software product manager at Technicolor Connected Home, responsible for the software strategy and software product definition supporting its worldwide CPE business
  • Kathy Giori, senior product manager in the Wired/Wireless Infrastructure & Networking business unit of Qualcomm Atheros, who manages several upstream Linux kernel development projects
