Kickstarter Campaign Aims to Make Frameless Art a Reality

Showcase art and comic books naturally without borders and bulk, or create a seamless collage effect for a unique look

LAS VEGAS, March 21, 2016 — (PRNewswire) — Anyone who's ever carefully packed up their framed art in a moving van, only to arrive at their new home to find shattered glass and damaged art, knows there has to be a better way to protect and display photographs, prints, paintings, comic books, and other art. Right now, that product doesn't exist. But if filmmaker William Hopp's new Kickstarter campaign is a success, Frameless will soon be the new way to simply and beautifully hang art at home or at work (and keep it safe in that inevitable move to a new house, too).

Frameless at Wizard World

Like every great "why didn't I think of that?" product, Frameless was born of necessity. Hopp, an avid collector of movie stills and video game prints, never felt comfortable displaying those works. Traditional photo frames, by definition and design, box in art, and mats can completely overpower smaller works. Going without a frame wasn't an option: Tacks, mounting putty, and double-sided tape can all damage the art itself.

But the key factor behind Hopp's drive to create Frameless is its ability to create a seamless collage effect. Making a collage on the wall with traditional frames requires careful planning and often considerable expense to find matching or coordinating frames, and overlapping framed art is virtually impossible.

"I wanted the seamless collage effect that is so hard to achieve with tacks, mounting putty or double-sided tape and impossible with traditional frames," Hopp explained. "The only reasonable way to achieve a collage for posters and prints today is to buy a collage frame, and the vast majority of those are only for 5"x7" photographs or smaller."

In contrast to traditional frames, mounting is simple with Frameless. Lay the art or comic book onto the custom die-cut plastic sleeve and fold the sides over to hold it in place. The included clear plastic stickers will hold the flaps in place long-term, but those who plan to regularly swap out art will prefer not to use them. Once the sides are folded, the spine fits into pre-cut slits and stays in place with the center spine locks. The wall mount attaches to the wall with dual nails; the spine easily attaches to the wall mount and allows the user to raise or lower the art up and down to display it at just the right height. Because the mounting system uses brackets that can increase the distance between Frameless and the wall, creating a collage effect is simple and never damages the art. Frameless is virtually invisible, and the spines and wall mount are never seen.

Frameless is currently available in 11"x17" and comic book-sized kits. Each kit comes with horizontal and vertical spines, accompanying center spine locks, and as stretch goals are unlocked, three different types of bracket pieces, allowing for eight different depths when combined. Even the nails are included — all that's needed to get Frameless on the wall is a hammer.

Hopp's initial Kickstarter campaign is for $50,000, which will fully cover the cost of manufacturing, packaging, and shipping Frameless to supporters. The stretch goals will allow Frameless to be made in a wider range of sizes and shapes including mounts for toys and figurines, as well as a handy leveling kit for easier, more precise installation. Once the initial goal is reached, supporters will have their own Frameless kits by Christmas.

Frameless made its comic con debut at Wizard World in Las Vegas in March, and the Kickstarter launches on April 19th, 2016 at 7:30 am PST.
