Future of Interior Design: Real-Life 3D Models Created by AR with a Click of a Button

Planner 5D, and interior design platform, joins Apple, Google and other tech giants in AR innovation

July 24, 2017 -- AR (Augmented Reality) is about to enter mainstream technology devices, which will change how we design our homes - among other things.

Planner 5D is an interior design app that is creating its own AR app that would automatically recognize walls, furniture and house design model created with the app by using image recognition technology. The new technology is scheduled to be launched in November of 2017.

The AR app would also create a 3D model of the house from a simple photo. A user would only need to snap a photo with their smartphone, which would be sent directly to a server, resulting in a 3D model of the house. The 3D project would be easy to edit and would allow to rearrange furniture, change textures, virtually add new furniture or to delete old furniture and exchange it with new options.

Planner 5D is joining the wave of AR devices, as major technology companies - Apple, Google, Microsoft and others - work on their own AR and VR technologies. Google recently released Google Glass, displaying 2D images, and Microsoft developed a Hololens headset, embedding 3D images surrounding the user. Apple  announced in June about its new ARKit, a platform for developing AR apps for iOS.

Currently, Apple’s AR works well only on a horizontal surface, when the image is well-lit. However, with the speed that technology is developing, next iPhone might be ready for the advanced AR that supports even interior design.

“There is an exciting future for interior design, when smartphones start integrating advanced AR technology,” said Alexey Sheremetyev, CEO of Planner 5D  iPhone 8, for example, will possibly have a depth-sensing camera and will recognize vertical dimensions, such as walls.. This would be a huge leap forward also for anyone designing their home, as this technology would allow to visualize such details as floor renovation, wall color change, introduction of virtual paintings, and so on."

Planner 5D has been focused on how to match AR with interior design, and has come up with solutions, such as an app dedicated only to AR.

“We have been developing AR technology for a couple of years now,” said Alexey Sheremetyev. “Our goal is to create a tool that would allow to visualize any design project as if it was a physical 3D model. It would allow a user to see their future house, layout and all decor details with real-life precision.”

AR technology, which will eventually move from smart devices into AR glasses, will change the way we view interior design, making it accessible to anyone. Planner 5D is also planning to implement AI into its platform, which will suggest optimal design ideas, adjusted to a specific user’s taste and desires.
