Next-generation communication standards are incorporating more sophisticated channel models to account for multipath losses. Link budget calculations are an essential step in the design of radio communications systems, however, their growing complexity requires a more robust approach to this type of analysis than a simplistic spreadsheet accounting for loss and gain.

A new primer featuring NI AWR Design Environment software, specifically Visual System Simulator™ (VSS) system simulator, examines how a more rigorous RF link budget analysis of an entire system can be determined through simulation, and how performing link budget analysis in VSS simulation software enables designers to address losses, gains and power levels to meet the operational requirements of the radio communication systems.
