Bluesky Helps to Shape the Future of AI Systems

Leicestershire, UK, 15 December 2020 – Aerial mapping company Bluesky International is working alongside organisations such as AstraZeneca, Toyota and Amazon Web Services to shape artificial intelligence (AI) systems of the future. Contributing to the multi-million pound UK Government project, Bluesky is supporting the prestigious Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship programme with funding for a University of Leicester research project.

Aiming to go beyond current concepts and systems to create AI solutions that are more trusted and more data adaptive, the University of Leicester project will bring together a world-class team of experts and stakeholders to showcase solutions for healthcare, security, space and manufacturing.

Bluesky is partnering with Professor Ivan Tyukin, of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Leicester. Head of the University’s Visual Intelligence Lab, Professor Tyukin is one of just 15 researchers from across the UK to have been awarded Turing AI Acceleration Fellowships as part of a £20 million investment by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

“Recent years have seen explosive progress in data-driven AI. But to be truly transformational, integration of AI throughout society requires understanding and trust,” commented Professor Tyukin. “This fellowship will enable me to work with a world-class team of experts and stakeholders to develop and showcase much-needed solutions to challenges in healthcare, security, space, and manufacturing sectors.

“I am excited by the transformative opportunities and impact which this project will create and deliver through established partnerships, participation and support from companies such as Bluesky International and hope that these solutions will enable creation of a new gold standard for methods in these important areas.”

“We already have a well-established relationship with the University having worked together on projects which use geographic data and AI to improve the mapping of trees and create new solutions for the insurance sector, so it was an obvious choice for us to be involved in this prestigious programme,” commented James Eddy, Technical Director at Leicestershire based Bluesky. “We are excited to be working alongside Ivan and hope that our involvement will help engender trust in AI and develop more robust and transparent AI algorithms.”

Turing AI Acceleration Fellowships are delivered through the UKRI’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), in partnership with Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, Office for AI and the Alan Turing Institute. Named after mathematician and AI pioneer Alan Turing, the fellowships aim to increase collaboration between academia and industry, such as Bluesky, with fellows bringing together a wide range of partners for their projects.
