Dr. X. Sharon Hu Receives Marie R. Pistilli Women in Engineering Achievement Award

University of Notre Dame professor and past DAC General Chair is honored for her research contributions and an ambassador to women in the design automation community

San Francisco, CA – June 15, 2023 –– Dr. X. Sharon Hu, professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame and past DAC 2018 General Chair, was selected to receive the 2023 Marie R. Pistilli Women in Electronic Design Award, a prestigious annual honor that recognizes individuals who have significantly helped advance women in electronic design. The award is named for the late Marie R. Pistilli, co-founder of DAC, who placed a high value on equality, diversity, and acceptance.

For over 20 years, Dr. Hu has been an influential ambassador from the academic community to the design automation community. Dr. Hu’s has made outstanding research and development contributions in low-power system design, circuits and architectures for emerging technologies, real-time embedded systems, and hardware-software co-design. She has published more than 450 papers. Most were presented at the top design automation and real-time systems conferences including DAC, DATE, RTSS, RTAS, and ECRTS. Dr. Hu’s three most cited papers, two from DAC and one from TVLSI are on real-time scheduling and are responsible for over 1,100 citations alone. Her work has 11,000 citations in total.  Dr. Hu is an ACM and IEEE Fellow and has received three best paper awards to date.  She has recently joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a rotating Program Director in the Division of Computing and Communication Foundations.

Dr. Hu has contributed to the advancement of women in electronic design by serving as an inspiration to other women in the research community and is effective in mentoring women early in their career path. Many who have known her have followed in her path. Her former advisees indicate that she has been a role model for a new generation of women scientists and researchers.

A former student writes:

“Her guidance allowed me to thrive professionally, and [enabled me] to achieve numerous accomplishments, including receiving several Best Paper Awards”.

A colleague writes,

“Her mentoring style is cheerful, methodical, unrushed, and unbending in commitment to scientific rigor, truth, and fairness. She manages to combine the very best aspects of the ‘formal’ and ‘friendly’ styles. The results, in terms of research quality and advisee careers have been impressive.”

Dr. Hu has received the Outstanding Service Recognition Award from IEEE and the Recognition of Service Award from ACM. She is the Editor-In-Chief of ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems and was Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems and ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems. She was the 2018 DAC General Chair and the General Chair and Technical Program Chair for RTSS. She is currently the General Chair of ESWEEK.

The Marie R. Pistilli Women in Electronic Design Award to Dr. Hu will be formally announced and presented at the upcoming Design Automation Conference, July 9-3, 2023, at Moscone West Center in San Francisco, Calif. About the Marie R. Pistilli Women in Electronic Design Award
Women have made important contributions and strides in the semiconductor industry for over 20 years. To recognize those who have dedicated time and effort toward these achievements, the Design Automation Conference (DAC) Executive Committee presents an annual award to honor an individual who has made significant contributions to help women advance in the field of EDA technology. The award is named for DAC’s former organizer, the late  Marie Pistilli, who worked tirelessly to further the advancement of women in engineering. Marie passed away in November 2015, but her memory and her legacy live on through her namesake award.

About DAC

The Design Automation Conference (DAC) is recognized as the premier event for the design of electronic circuits and systems, and for electronic design automation (EDA) and silicon solutions. A diverse worldwide community representing more than 1,000 organizations attends each year, represented by system designers and architects, logic and circuit designers, validation engineers, CAD managers, senior managers and executives to researchers and academicians from leading universities. Close to 60 technical sessions selected by a committee of electronic design experts offer information on recent developments and trends, management practices and new products, methodologies and technologies. A highlight of DAC is its exhibition and suite area with approximately 175 of the leading and emerging EDA, silicon, intellectual property (IP) and design services providers.  The conference is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Design Automation (ACM SIGDA), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer’s Council on Electronic Design Automation (IEEE CEDA).
