Xilinx Ships Industry's Largest Domain-Optimized FPGAs for Communication, DSP and Embedded Processing Applications

Industry's leading high-performance FPGA family enabling new levels of performance as system designers demand higher bandwidth, lower power and faster time to market

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Exponential growth in the demand for more bandwidth is putting pressure on electronic equipment makers everywhere to increase the performance of their systems, and get them to market quickly. To support system architects and designers of high-performance systems in meeting their performance, power consumption and time to market goals, Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today began shipping the Virtex(R)-5 SX240T and FX200T devices and has announced the new Virtex-5 TXT FPGA platform. All built on the industry-leading, high-performance Virtex-5 FPGA architecture, these devices give customers the world's highest performance reconfigurable DSP platform, the only FPGA device with dual embedded PowerPC(R) processors, and now the world's highest bandwidth serial connectivity.

"Xilinx has steadily come up with the leading-edge FPGA technologies and ecosystem of IP, tools and support services that can make the difference between realizing a promise and a product," said Mario LeCavalier, senior design engineer at Ross Video Ltd. "They have done it again remarkably well with the feature-to-cost ratio of Virtex-5 devices. The embedded gigabit serial IO allowed us to integrate expensive SD/HD video serializer and deserializer chips inside the FPGA with our new MDK system. Plus, the high count of available hardware multipliers is a blessing for digital video processing."

With up to 528 GMACs of multiply-and-accumulate performance and over 190 GFLOPS of single-precision, floating-point DSP performance, the SX240T device offers developers of broadcast video, medical imaging, wireless communication, defense, and high-performance computing applications the world's highest performing reconfigurable DSP solution. Meanwhile, the FX200T device establishes an industry record for embedded processing performance delivering a total of 1900 DMIPs with its two embedded PowerPC 440 Processor blocks. With 24 integrated 6.5Gbps serial transceivers, the FX200T device is the largest member of the Virtex-5 FXT FPGA platform optimized for embedded processing.

These devices complement the new Virtex-5 TXT devices. Optimized for 40GE, 100GE and other high-bandwidth communication protocol bridging application, the Virtex-5 TXT FPGA platform provides the highest number of serial transceivers at 6.5Gbps, more than doubling the transceiver count compared to other available FPGAs to deliver over 600Gbps total bandwidth and will begin shipping by the end of this year.

Industry's Leading High-Performance FPGA

Consuming between 35% and 40% less dynamic power than the previous 90nm family, Virtex-5 FPGAs offer developers new innovations in transceiver technology, DSP and embedded processor performance to enable customers to meet their next generation system design challenges.

"With 24 devices now shipping, the 65-nm Virtex-5 family is the industry's most widely adopted, high-performance FPGA platform," said Chuck Tralka, senior director of Product Marketing at Xilinx. "Our focus on building products with the best technology enables Xilinx to deliver new levels of network bandwidth, DSP and embedded processing capabilities to our customers as they overcome the many challenges of today's marketplace."

Pricing and Availability

Xilinx has been delivering the benefits of 65nm Virtex-5 FPGAs since May 2006, and is now shipping 24 devices across five platforms (LX, LXT, SXT, FXT and TXT). Engineering samples of the Virtex-5 SX240T and FX200T devices are available for purchase through Xilinx distributors at http://www.xilinx.com/onlinestore/silicon/online_store_v5.htm. The new Virtex-5 TX150T and Virtex-5 TX240T devices will begin sampling by the end of calendar 2008 with production devices available in the first quarter of 2009. Detailed pricing information on all three devices is available through Xilinx sales representatives and distributors. Xilinx(R) Virtex-5 EasyPath(TM) FPGAs offer a conversion-free path to high volume with up to 75 percent cost reduction. Virtex-5 EasyPath FPGA devices are available now for design with volume production by end of 2008 . Visit http://www.xilinx.com/virtex5 or http://www.xilinx.com/easypath for more information.
