Xilinx Delivers High Quality of Service Connectivity Solution for Streaming Media Across Ethernet AVB Networks

Xilinx, Harman develop industry's first Ethernet Audio Video Bridging Endpoint for FPGAs

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) announced the industry's first Ethernet Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Endpoint for development of broadcast, professional and consumer audio/video, automotive, and home networking systems. Developed in collaboration with Harman International Industries, the Xilinx(R) Ethernet AVB LogiCORE(TM) intellectual property (IP) core uses cutting-edge programmable technology to easily adapt to changes in the emerging IEEE 802.1 Ethernet AVB standard and support custom features. The first release of the Ethernet AVB LogiCORE IP is immediately available for Xilinx Virtex(R)-5 and Spartan(R)-3A field programmable gate array (FPGA) platforms.

The IEEE 802.1 Ethernet AVB protocol is a low-cost enhancement to the 802.3 Ethernet standard designed to provide a reliable, high quality of service (QoS) and low latency connectivity solution for streaming media (audio and video). The Xilinx Ethernet AVB Endpoint is a parameterizable core that operates at 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps and seamlessly connects to the Xilinx Tri-Mode Ethernet MAC (TEMAC), providing a highly flexible, scalable implementation to address the bandwidth and QoS limitations of standard Ethernet and wireless solutions. It is ideally suited for a broad range of applications, such as professional cameras, industrial surveillance systems, professional mixers, projectors, automotive head units, and networking interface cards.

"The IEEE 802.1 AVB Working Group is advancing standardization, quality and cost-efficiency of multi-channel audio and video in home, professional and automotive environments. In parallel with these efforts, we have been working closely with innovative industry leaders like Xilinx to develop this technology, which will lead to a host of new and exciting products from Harman International that deliver premium performance, universal connectivity, and unparalleled user-friendliness," said Rick Kreifeldt, vice president of the System Development and Integration Group at Harman International.

"Harman International is an ideal lead customer for our new Ethernet AVB Endpoint, given our long history of collaboration and their active participation in the IEEE 802.1 AVB Working Group," commented Mustafa Veziroglu, vice president, Product and Solutions Management at Xilinx. "The application experience and leadership Harman brings in the automotive, consumer electronics and professional audio markets has been invaluable throughout the entire development process, and especially now as we begin deployment into production environments."

Xilinx is demonstrating the new Ethernet AVB Endpoint LogiCORE IP block on the XtremeDSP(TM) solutions Video Starter Kit - Spartan-3A DSP FPGA Edition this week at CES, January 8-11 in Xilinx Booth #35171MP (Meeting Place Booth, South Hall 4).
