(May 8, 2009/Harrisburg, Pa.) GeoDecisions, an information technology company specializing in geospatial solutions, worked with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications to develop the Rat Information Portal (RIP). The portal enhances the reach of the city’s Pest Control Services (PCS) program by putting more information in the hands of the public.
The RIP uses map-based tools to help residents and city managers know where rats have been found. In addition, the RIP includes supporting documentation on understanding how to manage the presence of rats on properties and in communities throughout the city. Recently, the RIP was named a top five finalist out of 32 nominations in the Best Application of Technology category at TECHQuest Pennsylvania’s 17th Annual Technology Awards Gala.
PCS uses the portal to respond to public questions and concerns and prepare maps of affected areas for distribution at community meetings. The portal helps tenants, landlords, community leaders, business owners, and pest control professionals learn how to reduce the city rat population. The site is available at:
www.nyc.gov/rats.
