Sybase teams up with Geomatic Technologies for hosted mobile device management

‘Mobility-as-a-Service’ simplifies management of multiple mobile platforms and device types in the workplace

Sydney — February 08, 2011 — Sybase Inc., an SAP company (NYSE: SAP) and industry leader in enterprise and mobile software, today announced an agreement between Sybase Australia and its long-time enterprise mobility partner, Geomatic Technologies (GT), to bring mobility-as-a-service to Australia’s mid-market. With the hosted offering, GT’s managed services division, GTcentral, will enable businesses to benefit from Sybase Afaria’s comprehensive management and security features for smartphones and tablets – all remotely deployed and managed in GTcentral 's secure hosted environments.

Sybase® Afaria® is an enterprise-grade, highly scalable mobile device management solution that supports a wide range of platforms including Windows® Mobile, BlackBerry®, Palm®, Symbian™, Android™, iPhone® and iPad®. Core device management features of Afaria include over-the-air device provisioning, inventory and configuration, and software deployment and updating. Mobile security features include data backup, power-on password protection, data-on-device encryption, mobile remote control, anti-virus and firewall, remote "kill" and data wipe.

Commenting on the agreement, Dereck Daymond, managing director at Sybase Australia and New Zealand, said: “GT, a recognised leader in advanced mobile and spatial technologies, is a long-standing and successful Sybase partner. GTcentral provides high quality managed services to GT’s own clients. Its expert knowledge of Afaria and experience providing hosted and managed IT services ensure that it is well placed to bring mobility-as-a-service to the mid-market.’

Daymond added:  “We’re excited to expand our relationship to managed services, and expect hosted mobility management to be particularly popular in the mid-market where businesses typically have limited in-house IT resources and are challenged by the rise of ‘bring your own’ consumer devices.”

Mark Deady, Business Manager at GTcentral, said: “As smartphones and tablets of varying platforms proliferate in the workplace, there is a growing demand for enterprise-grade mobile device management. With our new mobility-as-a-service offering, our clients will have the freedom to choose between feature-rich on-premise or remotely managed enterprise mobility platform, enabling complete confidence when it comes to all mobile devices coming in and out of the enterprise.”

According to a recent survey by Kelton Research, nearly one in two IT managers stated that successfully managing mobile applications will top their priority list in 2011. 82 per cent also share the belief that it would be beneficial to host more of their mobile applications in the cloud. [1]
