Aspiring Engineers Get Boost from Z Corp. and 3D Printing

Third Annual Career and Technical Education Performance-Based Assessment Competition Sponsored by Z Corporation Will Focus on Accessibility Design Challenge

BURLINGTON, Mass., April 19, 2011 — (PRNewswire) — The third annual "Career and Technical Education (CTE) 3D Design and 3D Printing" competition will challenge participating teams of Hawaiian high school students with an exercise in practical architecture: to redesign an existing floor plan as an office / bedroom combination for a wheelchair-bound veteran.

Teams must submit a floor plan reflecting changes they have made, as well as a physical 3D model of the room, including walls and required elements, such as a desk, chair, computer, book storage, file storage, and full-size bed. Several Z Corp. 3D printers will be used to produce the 3D architectural models overnight. The speed of Z Corp. 3D printers allows models to be built in hours instead of days and makes that part of the competition possible.

Who -- The Hawaii State Department of Education Career and Technical Education (CTE), RAPID Technology, Z Corporation and JENKEN Architecture .

What -- Third annual CTE State 3D Design and 3D Printing Competition. 3D printing of student-designed floor plan models using four Z Corporation ZPrinters. Equipment supplied by Z Corp. technology partner RAPID Technology and 3D printing materials supplied by Z Corp.

When -- April 18-19, 2011

Where -- Sheraton Waikiki

Why -- 3D printing effectively communicates the real-world results of the choices students make in their room re-design. Many industries, including architecture, have adopted 3D printing as a regular part of their design process. By incorporating it into this annual event, CTE is reinforcing its goal of giving students practical skills with which to enter the workforce.
