CHASING project revolutionizes chassis and suspension engineering: Cross-disciplinary approach enhances LMS Virtual.Lab Motion solutions

LEUVEN (Belgium) – November 13, 2012- LMS International, the leading partner in test and mechatronic simulation, delivers comprehensive solutions for streamlined chassis and suspension engineering as outcome of its participation to the recently completed R&D project CHASING (Advanced Simulation Methodologies for Chassis & Suspension Engineering).

CHASING’s subsequent product and process innovations contribute to optimize handling and ride comfort of ground transportation vehicles. From the project’s prototype software, LMS has adopted novel technologies to extend its LMS Virtual.Lab Motion portfolio. LMS thereby provides strategic answers to major industrial chassis engineering trends: the wide adoption and integration of complex mechatronics systems, more significantly in the active safety domain, the necessity to multiply vehicle variants for mass customization, and the resulting augmented need for tight inter-departmental collaboration.

LMS Virtual.Lab state-of-the-art co-simulation interfaces to LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim (for hydraulic, pneumatic or electric subsystem modeling) and Simulink (for controllers) facilitate seamless integration of complex mechatronics content. LMS Virtual.Lab Rev11 furthermore incorporates the new Driving Dynamics GUI which, along with the Composer, permits the creation of customized applications for template-driven simulation and efficient driving dynamics scenario evaluation. Within this environment, dedicated interfaces, such as the leaf spring modeling tool, facilitate the design of complex chassis systems. LMS Virtual.Lab Motion TWR also enhances durability engineering by extending multi-body simulation models to tests on a virtual durability test rig. Finally, the collaboration with the Fraunhofer ITWM research institute has resulted in the seamless integration of a new CDT30/HPS (High Performance Solver) tire model in LMS Virtual.Lab Motion.

LMS further expands its corporate expertise in chassis engineering, supplying tools and processes for the entire chassis development cycle, from target setting and cascading to high fidelity modeling, in an integrated and collaborative environment.

“The CHASING outcomes strengthen LMS Virtual.Lab Motion as the prime software for advanced chassis and suspension engineering,” states Stefaan Goossens, Vice President Simulation Operations at LMS International. “Beyond that, LMS relies on its technology know-how and industry experience to connect the worlds of chassis, NVH and durability engineering. LMS offers solutions for an integrated inter-departmental and cross-disciplinary engineering process.”

IWT Vlaanderen ( www.iwt.be) supported LMS in the IWT O&O project 090408 “CHASING”. In the frame of the EUREKA European research project E!4907 “CHASING”, LMS joined a consortium of Polish partners, including AGH University of Science And Technology and EC Engineering in Krakow and bus manufacturer SOLARIS in Owinska, that focused on developing an innovative adaptive bus suspension system, relying on the pioneering LMS co-simulation approach for the early integration of active safety systems. The Polish National Centre for Research and Development ( www.ncbir.pl/en) co-financed the Polish project.
