Tower of the Dragon starts Kickstarter Project for 3D Animation in San Leandro

Dragons in San Leandro?

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., Feb. 20, 2013 — (PRNewswire) — Tower of the Dragon's Kickstarter Project (TOD) is building on creative talent and the new High Speed Fiber Optic Loop located in San Leandro. TOD will seek to raise funds from the local community and Kickstarter in February to produce the first full length Stereo 3D animation rendered at a record 120 Frames per Second.

Tower of the Dragon, introduces Lyric, a young girl who has to save a world where reading is forbidden and magic is only used by those who obey without thinking; a story about a child learning that making friends and being a friend is more powerful than any magic. Songs and examples interweave issues such as bullying, insecurity and self reliance.

"San Leandro's a perfect combination of high tech and reasonable rents," said Tracy McSheery,  founder of TOD and PhaseSpace, another advanced tech manufacturer located here over a dozen years. "Our employees live from San Francisco to Silicon Valley; being centrally located with BART and easy access to the freeways is important for us. The addition of Lit San Leandro's high bandwidth fiber allows our local team to interact with artists in Pakistan and China, exchange digital assets and then utilize cloud services for computationally intensive rendering and review by remote directors."

TOD will leverage their partnership with PhaseSpace Motion Capture, which produces real time performance animation for game developers, robotics, the U.S. Military and NASA, as well as hundreds of colleges and universities. TOD will be connected to clients and partners PhaseSpace has developed over the last decade, taking advantage of new technology for body and face animation tools.

"Even at 120 Frames per Second, we can produce a film for one tenth the cost of previous animated feature films; with motion capture technology and the latest hardware and software from Autodesk, HP, Intel and Nvidia. We will be using our unique tools, and refining existing processes to fundamentally transform the industry, to finish the film in two years for a fraction of the costs," says McSheery.
