Silicon Image Introduces Industry’s First MHL® 3.0 4K Ultra HD Solution for Mobile Devices

Latest Portfolio Additions Enable Flagship Smartphones and Tablets to Deliver an Immersive and Interactive Experience on 4K TVs and Monitors

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — December 16, 2013Silicon Image, Inc. (NASDAQ: SIMG), a leading provider of HD connectivity solutions, today announced the industry’s first 4K Ultra HD MHL® 3.0 solution comprising mobile transmitter, bridge, and multimedia switch integrated circuits (ICs). MHL is the leading HD and 4K Ultra HD connectivity standard for connecting a mobile device to large screen displays, while simultaneously charging the device. Silicon Image’s solution is the first to provide an end-to-end MHL 3.0 solution that enables mobile device manufacturers to deliver pristine 4K Ultra HD video resolution to displays while simultaneously transferring USB data over the same micro-USB connector.

“Silicon Image continues to lead the industry in HD connectivity solutions by delivering the first suite of products featuring MHL 3.0 functionality and 4K Ultra HD support to deliver cinema quality resolution from mobile devices to displays,” said David Kuo, senior director of marketing at Silicon Image. “With Silicon Image’s MHL 3.0 ICs, mobile device manufacturers can seamlessly incorporate the new enhancements of MHL 3.0 into their flagship products that feature interactive Ultra HD mobile PC and gaming applications.”

With double the bandwidth compared to MHL 2.0, MHL 3.0 delivers 4K Ultra HD resolution and a wider color gamut to create a more brilliant visual experience, while protected by the latest HDCP 2.2 standard. A bi-directional channel enables concurrent 4K video and high-speed peripheral support of mass storage and input devices such as a touch screen, keyboard and mouse.

The MHL technology standard was developed by promoters Nokia, Samsung, Silicon Image, Sony, and Toshiba. The MHL Consortium now has approximately 200 adopters and members supporting the MHL standard, including some of the largest mobile device and consumer electronics companies in the world. MHL-enabled products include smartphones, tablets, DTVs, monitors, projectors, A/V receivers, Blu-ray Disc™ players, cables, TV accessories, adapters, automotive accessories and more. Since the retail introduction of the first MHL-enabled devices in 2011, the MHL ecosystem has grown to an installed base of more than 400 million products and greater than 300 unique products in the marketplace today.

Product Details

The SiI8620 MHL 3.0 transmitter IC has been designed to work with the latest generation of 4K Ultra HD capable mobile application processors, while the SiI9394 MHL 3.0-to-HDMI 2.0 bridge IC enables connecting to legacy HDMI 1.x and next-generation HDMI 2.0 displays and monitors. Together, they simultaneously transmit up to 4K 2160p Ultra HD resolution video and USB data through an enhanced version of Silicon Image’s Media Data Tunneling (MDT) technology. MDT takes advantage of the high-speed data channel defined in the MHL 3.0 specification for simultaneous Ultra HD video and data transmission that includes support not only for USB, but also touch screen, keyboard, and mouse. The devices also implement the latest HDCP 2.2 encryption to protect premium content delivery and are backwards compatible with legacy MHL 1.0, 2.0, and HDCP 1.x standards.

In addition, the high-performance SiI6031 MHL 3.0 multimedia switch IC is available for OEMs who choose to use a single 5-pin connector in their mobile devices for both USB and MHL connections. The SiI6031 is co-located with the SiI8620 MHL 3.0 transmitter IC and supports switching between an MHL 3.0 port and two USB ports.
